Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster is worth considering if you want to play ATLUS’s apocalyptic RPG on a listed modern platform, but its value depends on how much you prize the game and its quality-of-life improvements over a more substantial remake. Critics have praised the return and those improvements while also questioning whether the remaster does enough for its price.

What the reviews say

The available critic excerpts point to a mixed value judgment rather than a clear-cut verdict. One view welcomes the return of a strong RPG and highlights quality-of-life improvements; another argues that the remaster could have done more at its price point. These are contrasting review opinions, not a complete survey of critics or a current aggregate score. Metacritic’s critic-review page collects the excerpts.

That tension gives prospective players a practical way to assess the game: decide whether access to this classic and its updated conveniences are enough for the asking price you see. The available review evidence does not establish a current score or settle value for every player.

What is included, and why Maniax matters

ATLUS describes the release as a modernized version of its apocalyptic classic. For version comparisons, the publisher’s Steam announcement says the added New Game -Maniax- mode follows the game content of Shin Megami Tensei III-Nocturne Maniax. That makes the mode a relevant point to check when deciding which version or content you want. ATLUS’s Steam announcement identifies the mode and announced the Steam release for May 25, 2021.

Which platform should you choose?

ATLUS lists platform editions, including Nintendo Switch, and announced a Steam release. Choose based on the platform you want to play on and the edition’s current price and contents; the sources available here do not establish reliable platform-by-platform performance comparisons for Switch, PlayStation, and Steam.

ATLUS’s official game page is the direct place to check its listed platform options. A physical Switch copy may suit players who prefer a cartridge, but current stock, regional editions, and prices are not established here, so verify those details with a retailer before buying.

Who is likely to enjoy the remaster?

  • Consider it if you want to experience ATLUS’s apocalyptic RPG on one of its listed platforms and value the quality-of-life improvements noted by critics.
  • Compare prices first if you expect a more extensive overhaul or are sensitive to whether the remaster justifies its asking price.
  • Check the edition if Maniax content is important to you; ATLUS specifically links the remaster’s New Game -Maniax- mode to the Maniax version’s game content.

ATLUS’s description establishes the premise and positioning, not an independent quality verdict. The review excerpts offer a useful but limited lens: they support both enthusiasm for revisiting the RPG and skepticism about the scale of the upgrade.
