Sharpness is the broad-use damage enchantment, while Smite specializes in damage against the undead.
What is the difference between Smite and Sharpness?
Minecraft Help describes Sharpness as increasing weapon damage and Smite as increasing damage to undead mobs. Microsoft’s Bedrock enchantment guide makes the distinction similarly: Sharpness increases damage dealt by melee attacks, while Smite increases damage dealt to mobs in the undead family.
That makes the choice primarily about the enemies you expect to face, not a universal ranking. The official descriptions establish the difference in scope, but the cited references do not provide comparable current damage figures, so an exact numerical advantage cannot be stated here.
Which enchantment should you choose?
| Your usual targets | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A mix of enemy types | Sharpness | Its description applies to weapon or melee damage generally. |
| Mostly undead mobs | Smite | Its damage increase is specifically for mobs in the undead family. |
If you are deciding on a general-purpose sword or axe and do not have a particular undead-heavy fight in mind, Sharpness is the safer all-round choice. If the weapon is meant for fighting undead, Smite’s narrower focus may suit that role better. These recommendations follow the official effect descriptions rather than a published damage benchmark.

What weapons and editions should you consider?
Microsoft’s Bedrock enchantment overview lists both Sharpness and Smite for swords and axes. Its Bedrock command reference supports both enchantments at levels I through V. Those details are specific to the cited Bedrock documentation; check the guide for your edition and version if you are considering a different weapon or setup.
Maces have additional compatibility rules. The Bedrock 1.21 notes say Density and Breach are mutually exclusive with Smite on a mace, and the Java 1.21 release notes describe the same central incompatibility. This is a version-specific consideration, separate from the usual sword-or-axe decision.

Can you put Smite and Sharpness on the same weapon?
For ordinary weapon-enchantment advice, treat them as competing choices rather than assuming you can combine them. The official references cited here do not lay out a complete current incompatibility matrix for every edition, weapon, and command-created item. If a particular combination matters to your setup, verify it against the current rules for that edition and version.

Microsoft’s Bedrock guide describes obtaining enchantments through enchanting tables, librarian villagers, and anvils. It also documents the /enchant command; the command reference says cheats are required and lists both Sharpness and Smite as supported enchantments.
