Steam vs. GOG at a glance
| What matters | GOG | Steam |
|---|---|---|
| Offline installation and DRM | GOG says its games have no DRM and can be played offline. Cyberpunk 2077 has an offline installer, and Galaxy is optional. GOG store page | The Steam sources reviewed list storefront features, but do not establish whether the Steam build is DRM-free or whether Steam is required to launch it. Steam store page |
| Store features | GOG Galaxy is optional; GOG associates it with synchronization features such as achievements and cloud saves. GOG store page | The listing advertises Steam achievements, trading cards, Steam Cloud, HDR, and Family Sharing. Steam store page |
| REDmod | CD PROJEKT RED documents a REDmod download path for the GOG version. CD PROJEKT RED modding support | The same support page documents a download path for the Steam version. Modding alone does not establish a storefront advantage. |
| PC boxed edition | GOG says the boxed PC edition contains a GOG game code, not discs. Retail codes can only be redeemed on GOG. GOG boxed-edition support GOG code redemption support | The documented boxed edition is not a Steam license. |
Why choose GOG?
You want the offline installer and documented DRM-free policy
GOG’s Cyberpunk 2077 listing says, “GOG games have no DRM and can be played without an internet connection, totally offline.” It also says Galaxy is optional and provides a fully offline installer. That makes GOG the clearest choice if you want to keep an installer and install the game without relying on the Galaxy client. GOG store page
You want the listed Ultimate Edition extras
GOG’s Ultimate Edition listing identifies Phantom Liberty as included and lists digital bonuses: soundtracks, sourcebooks, wallpapers, the digital comic Big City Dreams, and the Cyberpunk RED Easy Mode Guide. Confirm the contents shown for your region on the listing before checkout. GOG Ultimate Edition
Why choose Steam?
You use Steam’s library and social features
If you keep your PC games on Steam, its listed features may make it the more convenient fit: achievements, trading cards, Steam Cloud, HDR, and Family Sharing. These are Steam storefront features, not evidence that the game itself performs differently from the GOG version. Steam store page

What PC hardware does the Steam listing specify?

What if you are buying the PC boxed edition?
GOG’s support information says the Cyberpunk 2077 PC boxed edition contains a game code and no discs. The code is redeemed through a GOG account; GOG says retail codes cannot be redeemed on another platform or exchanged for a code for that platform. A boxed PC copy is therefore a GOG license, not a Steam key. GOG boxed-edition support GOG code redemption support

Prices, discounts, and edition contents can vary by region and change over time. Compare the live Steam and GOG listings in your region, including whether Phantom Liberty and any digital extras are included in the edition you plan to buy. The available information does not establish a current same-region price comparison or a refund-policy winner.
