It is less suited to players who want a straightforward plot or fast, combat-focused action: exploration, cautious resource use and a deliberately fragmented narrative are central to the experience.
What is SIGNALIS?
SIGNALIS is a single-player survival-horror game developed by rose-engine and released on 27 October 2022. Steam lists Balor Games as its publisher. You play Elster, a technician Replika who wakes from cryostasis in a wrecked vessel and searches a hostile, cold world. Identity, memory and the unknown shape a story set against dystopian science-fiction and cosmic-horror imagery.

Steam describes it as “A classic survival horror experience set in a dystopian future where humanity has uncovered a dark secret.” In practice, the classic survival-horror elements include searching rooms, following clues, solving puzzles, managing scarce resources and deciding when to avoid danger rather than confront it.
What do reviews say about SIGNALIS?
Review coverage is favorable overall, especially on atmosphere, art direction, puzzles and narrative ambition. Scores are snapshots, not permanent measures: Metacritic listed an 81 Metascore from 32 critic reviews and an 8.4 user score on the page consulted for this article. Steam showed 96% positive from 21,371 English reviews and 95% positive from 409 recent reviews in 2026; those are platform-user ratings, separate from critic scores, and their totals can change. Critics frequently commend the game’s oppressive atmosphere, puzzle-led exploration and willingness to tell its story indirectly. The same qualities create its main trade-offs: the plot can be difficult to piece together, and inventory limits and backtracking may feel cumbersome. For example, MeriStation praises the pixel-art direction and varied puzzles while noting backtracking, limited enemy variety and occasional awkwardness when positioning Elster to interact with objects or doors.

Retro-tech environments, oppressive lighting and surreal science-fiction imagery give the game a distinctive identity. Its visual style supports the tension rather than making the experience feel like a conventional action game.

Puzzles and exploration
Progress depends on searching environments, reading clues, solving riddles, unlocking routes and sometimes returning to places you have already visited. The puzzles and environmental investigation reward careful attention, but players looking for constant forward momentum may find the pace slow.
A story that invites interpretation
Information arrives in fragments, including flashbacks, documents and environmental details. Themes of identity and memory give players plenty to interpret, but the game does not promise to explain every development plainly. If you prefer an explicit, easy-to-follow narrative, this is a significant consideration rather than a minor quirk.

Survival-horror decisions
Resource management, a limited inventory, locked routes and the option to avoid some enemies put pressure on decisions about what to carry and when to engage. These systems echo classic survival horror and reinforce caution, though inventory handling can interrupt the flow.

When comparing it with another horror game, useful questions are whether you want direct or fragmented storytelling, combat or puzzle-led play, generous supplies or deliberate scarcity, realistic or surreal imagery, and forward momentum or environmental investigation. Those preferences are more informative than a universal ranking.

How long is SIGNALIS, and what platforms is it on?
MeriStation estimates a playthrough at 7–8 hours. That is one reviewer’s estimate, not a guaranteed completion time; exploration, puzzle-solving and how much time you spend interpreting the story can affect an individual run.
Metacritic lists PC, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 versions. The PlayStation listing says the PS4 version is playable on PS5, while noting that system updates may be needed and some PS4 features may be absent. Check the store for your region and platform before buying, since availability and prices can change. Steam lists eight supported languages and provides the PC requirements on its store page.
