Is Sleep Awake worth playing? Yes—if your idea of great horror is a distinctive, surreal atmosphere rather than stealth that keeps evolving. EYES OUT’s first-person horror game has a striking premise and memorable imagery, but its familiar stealth and exposition-heavy storytelling make it an uneven experience.
What is Sleep Awake?
Sleep Awake is a first-person psychedelic horror narrative game developed by EYES OUT, LLC. and published by Blumhouse Games. Its official Steam description calls it “an immersive first-person psychedelic horror narrative experience that explores the realm between sleep and death.” The game’s creative leads are Cory Davis and Robin Finck; Steam associates Davis with Spec Ops: The Line and Finck with Nine Inch Nails.

You play as Katja in the last known city on Earth, where people vanish when they sleep. She must stay awake, contend with cult factions, solve puzzles, and protect the people she loves. The experience combines stealth, chase sequences, FMV, and surreal visual passages.
What makes it a beautiful nightmare?
The contrast between frightening and beautiful imagery is the game’s clearest strength. A PC Gamer hands-on preview published October 13, 2025, highlighted that visual contrast, including a sequence where the floor gives way and rising water surrounds Katja. That preview is evidence of the game’s visual ambition, not a verdict on the finished release.

GamesRadar’s review of the PS5 version also praised the premise and the way surreal imagery becomes more integrated with stealth late in the game. But the review found that unsettling visuals often appear while the player is safe, which blunts their ability to create sustained fear. The result can be gorgeous and unnerving without being consistently scary.
How well do the stealth and story work?
Stealth
The early environments and routine stealth feel familiar, according to GamesRadar. The game’s later blend of surreal imagery and stealth is more distinctive, but it does not make the mechanics feel consistently inventive. If you want horror built around varied, demanding stealth systems, this is not its strongest selling point.

Story and characters
The premise—sleep itself as a threat—is an effective foundation for horror. GamesRadar found, however, that the main characters can feel exposition-heavy. Players drawn primarily to clear, nuanced character development may find that the storytelling does not match the strength of the central idea.
How long is Sleep Awake?
GamesRadar reviewer Abbie Stone estimated roughly 3–4 hours for the PS5 version. Treat that as one reviewer’s estimate, not a guaranteed completion time: pace, exploration, and play style can affect how long a run takes.

Sleep Awake released on December 2, 2025, according to Steam and the PlayStation Store. It is listed for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Who should play Sleep Awake?
- Play it if you value surreal visual design, sound, atmosphere, and a high-concept horror premise.
- Be more cautious if you need mechanically varied stealth, sustained scares, or character writing that communicates less through exposition.
That balance is also reflected in the available coverage: GamesRadar’s full review identifies the uneven stealth and storytelling, while PC Gamer’s earlier preview illustrates the visual appeal without assessing the complete released game.
