Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is a separate expanded edition with additional demons and two story paths, so its roster and unlock conditions should not be assumed to apply to the original. The core loop is straightforward: recruit demons, register useful allies in the Compendium, and use fusion or essences to shape your party.
What the Demon Compendium and fusion do
Demon Fusion combines allies to create a different demon. Some specific combinations produce powerful demons that cannot be obtained elsewhere, as Nintendo explains on its official game page. The Compendium preserves a record of demons you have registered so you can summon them again by paying Macca, the in-game currency.
Registration is especially useful when you want to fuse away a demon but may want that ally back later. It also gives you a way to rebuild your roster around new recruits and fusion results without permanently losing every demon you have used before.
How to use the Compendium when planning fusions
Register demons you may want to reuse
Before removing a useful demon from your active party through fusion, register it if you want the option to summon it again. Summoning a registered ally costs Macca, so consider that cost when deciding whether to restore a demon or fuse with the allies currently available.

Check the in-game fusion record
A review of the original game describes its reverse Compendium fusion record as showing possible combinations and the costs involved, which vary according to the demons that must be summoned. Treat this as a planning aid, not a substitute for the game’s own confirmation: inspect the displayed recipe and price in your copy before committing. The description is secondary reporting, and exact options can depend on your available demons.
Confirm prerequisites for a target demon
Not every demon is obtained through the same route. A target may require a particular combination, or an unlock condition may apply. Check the fusion options and any stated prerequisite in the game rather than assuming a recipe from another edition or update will work in yours.

Use demon essences to shape skills
Demon essences let you transfer skills to the Nahobino or an ally. Nintendo’s beginner tips explain that a recipient can inherit skills from an essence while retaining existing abilities. Before selecting skills, compare the recipient’s skill potential: it helps you judge which types of abilities suit that demon and can inform which skills to pass on. Original Shin Megami Tensei V versus Vengeance
ATLUS describes Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance as an expanded edition with new areas, demons, and two complete story paths: Canon of Creation and Canon of Vengeance. The original 2021 release is listed as a Nintendo Switch title; Vengeance is listed for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and Windows/Steam. ATLUS’s Vengeance page also shows physical editions.

A guide focused on Vengeance’s compendium is available, but its counts and unlock details belong to that edition and should be checked against the player’s update state. Do not use an unqualified roster count as a total for the original.
Vengeance update 1.0.3: Marici and Demon Navigators
ATLUS’s Vengeance version 1.0.3 notes document six added Demon Navigators and the demon Marici. The notes say Marici can be recruited and unlocked for fusion after the “Guardian of Light” subquest. The Navigators are a separate feature from additions to the demon compendium, so do not treat all six as new demons. Consult the ATLUS update notes and verify that your game is on the relevant version before relying on this unlock condition.

Finding a specific demon or completing the roster
To look up an individual demon, first confirm which edition and update you are playing, then check the in-game fusion record and any prerequisites shown for that target. If a reference lists a combination, compare it with the game’s displayed recipe and summoning cost before spending Macca.
There is no authoritative, version-specific total demon count or comprehensive official fusion table established here. Completion lists and recipe references can therefore differ by edition, update, and unlock state; use a list that explicitly names your version rather than treating its total or recipes as universal.
