Should You Use 1600 or 800 DPI?

800 DPI favors slower, more controlled movement; 1600 DPI moves the pointer farther per hand movement. Compare both with your other sensitivity settings held steady.

Neither 800 nor 1600 DPI is universally better. At 800 DPI, the pointer or aim moves less for the same physical mouse movement, which can make slower, more controlled aiming easier. At 1600 DPI, it moves farther, which may suit you if you prefer faster movement. Compare them with the same operating-system and game settings, then keep the one you can control comfortably.

What changes when you switch DPI?

DPI—also called CPI in Logitech’s guidance—describes how much the cursor responds to physical mouse movement. At 1600 DPI, the pointer travels farther for a given hand movement than it does at 800 DPI. That does not make 1600 inherently more accurate or 800 inherently better: perceived sensitivity also depends on operating-system pointer speed and, in games, the sensitivity setting.

Available DPI steps depend on the mouse. Logitech lists 800 and 1600 among example configurable levels, alongside 400, 2400 and 3600, but support varies by model. Its MX518 installation guide lists 400, 800 and 1600 DPI and identifies 800 as that model’s default. [Logitech gaming software guide; MX518 installation guide]

Which setting makes more sense for gaming?

For FPS aiming

800 DPI is a reasonable starting point if you value controlled aim and are comfortable making larger hand movements. Razer describes 800 DPI or lower as a common low-sensitivity example for FPS players seeking more precise aim; it also notes that a 180-degree turn may require multiple swipes. This is manufacturer guidance, not a universal rule or a result from an independent comparison. [Razer sensor guidance]

Choose 1600 DPI instead if you prefer the aim to travel farther with each movement or need to make turns within less available mouse space. The practical trade-off is movement range: lower DPI means more physical travel for the same on-screen movement, while higher DPI means less.

For other games and everyday pointer use

There is no single best setting for every task. Logitech frames sensitivity as a matter of task and comfort: precision work may call for lower sensitivity, while moving across screens may favor higher sensitivity. The same preference applies when choosing a gaming mouse setting: use the option that lets you make the movements you need comfortably and consistently. [Logitech DPI guide]

How to compare 800 and 1600 DPI

  1. Check that your mouse supports both settings. Use its DPI button or configuration software; the available stages vary by model.
  2. Keep other sensitivity controls fixed. In a game, leave in-game sensitivity unchanged. Keep operating-system pointer speed unchanged as well.
  3. Try the same task at each setting. Compare how precisely you can aim or place the pointer, how far it travels per hand movement, whether the speed feels comfortable, and whether you can make needed movements within your desk or mouse-pad space.
  4. Keep the setting you control best. If neither feels right, adjust one control at a time rather than changing DPI, game sensitivity and pointer speed together.

This is a practical way to make the comparison, not a validated test protocol. Logitech’s guidance explains the effects of sensitivity and task; Razer’s explains the FPS trade-off between precise aim and the physical movement needed for large turns. [Logitech DPI guide; Razer sensor guidance]

Where to adjust pointer speed

Changing operating-system pointer speed is not the same as changing the mouse’s DPI. If you are comparing DPI, leave pointer speed alone so it does not confound the result. If you do need to adjust it, Logitech’s guide gives these paths; labels can vary by operating-system version:

What the available figures do—and do not—show

The cited 800 and 1600 DPI values are examples of settings offered by some mouse models, not evidence that one setting produces better results for most players. Razer’s 800-or-lower FPS recommendation is vendor guidance, not a population statistic. The available sources do not establish an independently tested winner between 800 and 1600 DPI.
