Hackaday reported on the project by Sebastian Mihai on October 23, 2024. The accessible report confirms the seven-hack count but does not name every version or map each example to a particular one.
What changes in the seven hacks?
The hacks layer new interactions onto the arcade game rather than rebuilding how its fighters move and fight. The examples Hackaday describes include catching birds, throwing barrels at the opposing player, and dodging fire. The report does not identify which of the seven versions contains each feature, so these examples should be read as a picture of the project, not a complete version-by-version feature list.
The distinction matters: a familiar underlying feel can coexist with surprising new events. Mihai deliberately avoided changing the original game physics, according to Hackaday’s October 23, 2024 report.
How were the arcade ROMs modified?
The game’s original source code was unavailable, so the work was done by modifying the compiled binary: the machine instructions and data stored in the ROM, rather than the original human-readable code. Hackaday describes three broad techniques used in the project.

- Bypass existing behavior: Short-circuit patches, such as no-operation instructions (NOPs) or early returns, can prevent an existing routine from running as usual.
- Add code in unused ROM space: New machine code can be placed in space not occupied by the original program, with spare RAM used to hold state while the game runs.
- Redirect execution with hooks: At selected points, a hook sends the game to the added code, which can perform the new behavior before control returns to the original program.
To understand the existing program, Mihai used the MAME debugger to disassemble the binary and annotate it by hand. The report says the project could draw on an existing 68000 toolchain because Capcom’s Knights of the Round shared CPS-1 hardware with Champion Edition.
Where did the new graphics come from?
New gameplay also needed visual elements. Hackaday reports that Mihai removed some title-screen effects and in-game graphics to free graphical tiles for reuse. That is a practical constraint of altering an existing arcade ROM: adding an effect may require repurposing data already in the game rather than simply expanding the original art set.

What is known about the seven individual versions?
The report establishes that seven versions exist, but its accessible text does not provide a complete list of names or enough detail to compare each version’s mechanics. It also does not establish current patch availability or compatibility requirements. Without those specifics, there is no reliable basis for ranking the hacks or recommending one as the definitive version.
