Before you choose, check whether the item still fits a build you want to play or might be worth upgrading. You do not need to keep gear just to preserve its appearance: collected looks remain available after an item is dismantled, sold, or stored.
When to keep gear instead of disposing of it
Check an item’s stats and engravings against the playstyle you want to use. A lower-level weapon may still suit your build, and being outleveled does not automatically make it disposable: Ubisoft’s starter guide recommends upgrading a favorite weapon at a blacksmith and adding engravings.
Keep an item if you expect to use it, upgrade it, or build around its bonuses. Gear and engravings support different playstyles, and Ubisoft’s beginner tips recommend useful engravings and loadouts for different approaches.
How to choose between dismantling and selling

There is no established universal rule that one option pays better for every item, rarity, or stage of the game. Check the result shown in your inventory before confirming, then choose based on the resource you currently need.

Do not keep gear just for its appearance
Ubisoft’s Visual Customization System announcement says a collected appearance remains selectable even if the item is dismantled, sold, or stored. Once you have collected the item, keeping it in your inventory is unnecessary just to retain its look.
Loot war supplies before destroying them
If you find war supplies in the world, loot them before destroying them when you want the resources. Ubisoft’s starter guide specifically recommends looting war supplies first.
