Shadowrun Returns received broadly favorable reviews, but critics were divided on how much its tactical role-playing and campaign deliver. Metacritic lists a 76/100 score from 54 critic reviews, with 31 positive, 23 mixed, and no negative reviews. Reviewers most often praised its writing, atmosphere, and combat; reservations centered on a linear campaign, limited tactical or RPG depth, and design friction.

What is the critic consensus on Shadowrun Returns?

Metacritic’s listing, accessed October 8, 2026, gives Shadowrun Returns a 76/100 Metascore from 54 critic reviews and labels the result “Generally Favorable.” Its displayed breakdown is 31 positive reviews (57%), 23 mixed (43%), and zero negative. This is an aggregate snapshot, not a claim that every critic was enthusiastic; scores and counts may change as the listing changes. Metacritic’s overall review listing and its PC critic-review page show the same total in the captured results.

The broad pattern is more useful than the number alone: critics who connected with the game valued its world, dialogue, and turn-based encounters, while more reserved reviews questioned the campaign’s flexibility and the depth of its systems. It is therefore a stronger fit for someone drawn to a compact, story-led tactical RPG than for someone seeking an expansive, highly reactive role-playing campaign.

What did critics praise?

Writing and atmosphere

Positive reviews highlighted the writing and the appeal of Shadowrun’s cyberpunk-meets-fantasy setting. Steam describes the game as a single-player, turn-based tactical RPG set in a world where magic and technology coexist. Critics who responded to that premise saw the setting and story as central strengths rather than just a backdrop for combat.

Turn-based tactical role-playing

Hardcore Gamer awarded the game 90/100 in a review dated July 25, 2013, calling it “one of the most satisfying and complete tactical roleplaying experiences to come out of 2013 and realistically the last few years.” Game Informer scored it 85/100 and argued that it could appeal to players unfamiliar with the tabletop game or earlier console titles. These are individual reviews, not a substitute for the mixed reactions elsewhere in the aggregate.

Tools for custom adventures

GamesBeat’s 85/100 review praised the user-created-adventure toolbox. That matters if the appeal is not limited to the authored campaign: Steam’s feature list also describes team-based tactical combat and classless skill progression, and the editor gives the game a campaign-making dimension beyond its main story.

What were the main criticisms?

Linearity and a world that can feel underused

GameWatcher’s 80/100 review, dated July 29, 2013, praised the writing and XCOM-inspired combat but identified linearity, a lack of a save function, and an underused world as shortcomings. The criticism captures a key trade-off: the setting may be compelling, yet the campaign does not always give players the freedom or breadth they might expect from a role-playing game.

Limited tactical and RPG depth

IncGamers scored the game 60/100 and described it as capable but light on tactics and role-playing depth. That view contrasts with reviewers who found the combat satisfying; the difference is partly about expectations. A player looking for engaging turn-based encounters may find enough to enjoy, while someone seeking many layers of tactical choice or a broad character system may find the package restrained.

Design friction and historical bug reports

EGM’s 70/100 review excerpt mentioned design oversights and a game-breaking bug. GameWatcher’s save-function criticism also appears in reviews from 2013. These are historical reports from the launch-era review cycle, not evidence that the current build still has the same problems; the available evidence does not establish the present status of those issues.

How do the reviews translate into a recommendation?

  • Consider it if you want a story-forward, single-player tactical RPG with a distinctive cyberpunk-and-fantasy setting, team combat, and an editor for custom adventures.
  • Be more cautious if your priority is a large, open-ended world, extensive tactical systems, or a campaign with substantial freedom and breadth. Those are the areas critics most often questioned.
  • Read the individual reviews that match your priorities. The aggregate score condenses different judgments: praise for atmosphere and role-playing sits alongside mixed assessments of depth, linearity, and friction.

What kind of game is Shadowrun Returns?

Steam identifies Harebrained Schemes as developer, Paradox Interactive as publisher, and July 25, 2013 as the release date. Its store description categorizes the game as a single-player, turn-based tactical RPG. The feature list names team-based tactical combat, classless skill progression, and a blend of 2D and 3D art. Can you play it on your system?

Steam’s listing includes requirements for Windows, macOS, and SteamOS/Linux, but it also notes that Steam client support for older Windows and macOS versions has changed since the original requirements were written. Check the live listing against your operating system and hardware before buying; original minimum requirements are not a guarantee of compatibility with every current computer.
