Spelunky and Spelunky 2 are challenging platform games built around unpredictable, destructible levels and systems that reward learning through repeated attempts. The original is the more approachable place to begin; the sequel keeps the series’ core identity while expanding it, making it a natural next step for players who want greater depth.
What makes Spelunky different?
In the original, levels are randomly generated and fully destructible, according to the Steam listing for Spelunky. That combination makes each run a changing problem rather than a fixed sequence: hazards, enemies and the environment interact, and a route that worked once may not be safe the next time.
The games’ difficulty is part of that design. PC Gamer’s platformer guide describes the original as difficult and emphasizes learning how its systems interact. Progress therefore comes not only from precise platforming but also from recognizing risks and adapting when a situation changes.

PC Gamer recommends starting with the original before moving to the deeper and more challenging sequel. That is a useful order if you are new to the series; experienced players who already know its style may prefer to start with Spelunky 2.

If you enjoy demanding platforming, unpredictable runs and learning through failure, the original offers a strong entry point. Choose Spelunky 2 if you already know you want more depth and are comfortable with a steeper challenge. Neither is an ideal pick if you want a forgiving experience or a fixed route through each level.
