Spelunky 2 is a richly designed, highly replayable roguelike platformer—and a strong recommendation if you enjoy learning through repeated, punishing failures. Its inventive levels, secrets, and chaotic interactions make each run a chance to discover something new. But the difficulty is not a minor hurdle: it is the defining caveat for newcomers and anyone looking for a relaxed platformer.

What critics think of Spelunky 2

Reviews are strongly favorable, especially about the sequel’s ability to reward experimentation and make its world feel full of possibilities. On Metacritic, a PlayStation Universe review excerpt calls it “a thunderous sequel that surpasses its already incredible predecessor in every way that counts.” A separate God is a Geek excerpt praises its improvements while explicitly qualifying the recommendation: “Spelunky 2 improves upon the original in every conceivable way, and if you can tolerate the difficulty is an absolute must-play.”

Individual outlets’ scores reflect that enthusiasm, while also representing distinct editorial judgments: GameSpot gives it 8/10, and PC Gamer scores it 87/100. PC Gamer’s review also argues that the game adds content without substantially advancing the original’s formula. The scores are historical review assessments, not a measure of current player sentiment.

What makes the game stand out?

Spelunky 2 builds on the original’s randomized platforming: runs take you through layered levels filled with traps, items, branching routes, and secrets. Its official Steam listing also highlights rideable animals and dynamic liquid physics. These systems combine in unpredictable ways, so learning how hazards and objects interact is as important as quick movement. Repeated runs are part of the design: knowledge gained from one attempt can help you make a better decision in the next, even when a run ends abruptly.

Winning Moves Yahtzee Words, Family Word Game Version of Yahtzee
  • IT'S BACK!: Originally produced in the 1980's this is Yahtzee but with letters and words instead of numbers
  • 7 LETTER DICE: Instead of 7 regular dice like in standard Yahtzee, you get 7 Letter Dice to spell words and combinations
  • FAMILIAR SCORESHEET: The Yahtzee Words Scoresheet is split between an Upper Section and Lower Section just like standard Yahtzee. You must fill in a score on every turn - and try to get that Upper Bonus to score big
  • NOT JUST WORDS: Yes you'll need to make clever 2 to 6 Letter Words, but you'll also need to get All Consonants, All Vowels, Multiple Words, and the EXTREMELY rare 7 letter word Yahtzee
  • SKILLS: This isn't just for experienced word game players. Anyone who is 8 or older can play! Your vocabulary will likely improve - as will your word/letter jumble skills

That discovery loop is the game’s central appeal. Steam reproduces an IGN review excerpt describing the satisfaction of improvement through skill and knowledge. The appeal is not simply reaching the end once; it is becoming more capable, finding new routes, and seeing more of a system that is deliberately difficult to master.

Is Spelunky 2 too hard?

It can be, depending on what you want from a platformer. Critics repeatedly praise the challenge’s rewards while identifying the learning curve as a barrier for newcomers. Expect mistakes to cost you a run, and expect improvement to come from understanding the game rather than relying on a forgiving difficulty curve. If you like demanding games that make you adapt after failure, the difficulty is part of the payoff. If you want a gentle, low-stakes platforming experience, this is a poor fit.

Is it worth playing solo or in co-op?

Solo play is supported, and the game’s emphasis on learning systems and exploring randomized runs gives a solo player plenty to do. Multiplayer is also available, but player counts and modes vary by platform listing:

Platform listing Play options stated by the source
Nintendo Switch Local play for 1–4 players; online play for 2–4 players.
PlayStation Online co-op with up to three buddies.
Steam / PC Online and shared-screen co-op; the listing also describes cross-platform multiplayer features.

These are the features stated on the respective store pages; they do not establish a complete cross-play compatibility matrix for every platform pairing or mode. Check the current listing for the edition you plan to play if matching up with friends is decisive.

Which platform should you choose?

The game is listed for PC, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation, with the PlayStation page covering PS4 and PS5. Nintendo lists TV, tabletop, and handheld modes for Switch, and says behavior is consistent on Switch 2. On PC, Steam provides system requirements and recommends a gamepad; a controller is optional, and no particular model is specified. The available platform information does not establish comparative performance, so choose based on where you want to play and which system your friends use rather than assuming one edition runs better.
