Sonic Colors: Ultimate is worth considering for the strength of the 2010 Wii game it remasters, but reviews have not delivered one platform-neutral verdict. Launch-era critics praised the underlying game and some additions while also reporting technical problems and uneven polish, with Switch concerns especially prominent. Later coverage found the patched Switch version much improved; that is useful context, not proof that every issue is fixed on every platform today.
What critics thought of Sonic Colors: Ultimate
The broad critical picture is mixed. Reviews recognized the appeal of the original game’s level design and the remaster’s additions, but launch coverage also described glitches and a lack of polish in some versions. Those reactions should be read as launch-era assessments, not as a definitive account of every later build.
Platform-specific review pages make an important distinction: Switch and PS4 coverage are tracked separately. The Switch version drew particular technical criticism around launch, so a general summary of the game can obscure differences between versions. Is Sonic Colors: Ultimate worth playing?
If you want to experience Sonic Colors and have not played the 2010 Wii original, Ultimate is a reasonable way to approach it: the central attraction is the underlying game, while the remaster adds updated presentation and other changes. The critical evidence supports that qualified recommendation, not a claim that every version is equally polished or that the remaster is essential for players who already own the original.

Your tolerance for technical rough edges matters. Launch reviews raised genuine concerns, while later Switch coverage suggests that updates improved that version. If smooth performance is your priority, weigh the platform and the age of each review rather than relying on a single overall score.
Is the Switch version fixed?
SEGA’s official game site and update notices document platform patches. In a review published December 24, 2021, MeriStation assessed Switch version 3.0 and described the experience as substantially improved compared with launch: MeriStation’s version 3.0 review.

That establishes that the Switch version received meaningful post-launch updates and that one later review found the experience much better. It does not establish the latest installed build on every platform, independently confirm every remaining bug is resolved, or provide a current side-by-side technical benchmark. Treat “fixed” as too broad unless you are checking a specific platform and build.
Which version should you buy?
Choose based on the platform you already use and the specific edition currently offered. SEGA’s release announcement lists Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC via the Epic Games Store; Nintendo also maintains an official Switch listing. The available review evidence supports extra caution when interpreting Switch launch reviews, but it is not enough to declare one platform the universal best version.

When comparing opinions, keep three questions separate: how much you value the original game’s design, what the remaster adds for you, and how a particular platform performed at the time the review was written. Launch impressions and post-patch assessments describe different builds and points in the game’s history. The evidence here offers useful context for those distinctions, but not a comprehensive current technical test across Switch, PS4, and PC.
