SEGA’s official synopsis does not confirm that Shadow reunites with Maria in SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS. It says Shadow travels to the Space Colony ARK as Black Doom returns and a time-space anomaly disturbs the world. Maria is not named, so the synopsis leaves the specific reunion question unanswered.
Why fans connect the game to Maria
Shadow’s trip to the Space Colony ARK and the campaign’s emphasis on his past naturally invite questions about Maria. SEGA’s English release description frames the story around Sonic and Shadow facing their pasts amid a mysterious creature’s distortion of time and space. The more specific Japanese story synopsis says Black Doom’s return is unfolding alongside the anomaly and that Shadow goes to the ARK seeking the truth. Neither synopsis names Maria or describes a scene in which they meet. SEGA’s official story synopsis

That distinction matters: a story setup can make a reunion feel plausible to fans without confirming that it happens in the finished game. The fan phrasing “if we don’t get to see Maria again” captures that anticipation, but an individual discussion is not evidence of what the game contains or what Sonic fans broadly expect. What SEGA has said about Shadow’s campaign
SEGA describes SHADOW GENERATIONS as a new campaign focused on Shadow. In the PlayStation Blog announcement, Sonic Team Creative Officer Takashi Iizuka said: “With Shadow’s portion of the title, players will get to know him more as a character and understand his motivations.” He also described the project as pairing a brand-new Shadow storyline with the original Sonic Generations story. These comments establish the campaign’s character-focused intent; they do not promise a Maria appearance or reunion. PlayStation Blog announcement

There is no published statistic in the sources cited here measuring how many Sonic fans expect Shadow and Maria to reunite. SEGA reported that the game had sold more than two million units across physical and downloaded sales on all platforms as of its January 24, 2025 announcement; that company-reported sales figure says nothing about fans’ reunion expectations.
