Sony confirmed in February 2026 that it is closing Bluepoint Games, the PlayStation studio behind the Demon’s Souls and Shadow of the Colossus remakes. The closure was expected to take effect the following month, with 70 employees facing layoffs, according to Game Developer’s report of Bloomberg’s reporting. Sony said the decision followed a recent business review but did not give a more detailed reason.
What happened to Bluepoint Games?
Bluepoint is an Austin, Texas-based studio owned by Sony Interactive Entertainment and part of PlayStation Studios. Sony confirmed the closure in February 2026 and said it would take effect the following month. Game Developer reported that 70 employees faced layoffs, attributing that figure to Bloomberg’s reporting. Game Developer’s report includes Sony’s statement thanking the team for its work.
Sony’s spokesperson called Bluepoint “an incredibly talented team” whose technical expertise had delivered exceptional experiences for PlayStation players, and thanked its employees for their “passion, creativity and craftmanship.”
Why is Sony closing Bluepoint?
The explanation Sony gave in the statement reported by Game Developer was that the closure followed a recent business review. Sony did not publicly provide a more specific studio-level rationale in that statement. The available reporting therefore does not establish a detailed financial, performance or strategic cause.
