A June 25, 2024 GameSpot report said Sony was reportedly working on backward compatibility for “select” PS3 games, but the claim came from an insider and Sony had not confirmed it. The report did not identify supported games or say when, or how, they might become playable.
What the PS3 compatibility report actually says
GameSpot attributed the claim to Shpeshal_Nick, an insider, who said Sony was working on selective PlayStation 3 backward compatibility. He told GameSpot: “I didn’t get any more details than that. Will it have an FPS boost? I’ve got no idea…All I heard was that Sony’s working on selective PlayStation 3 backwards-compatibility.” This was an attributed report, not a Sony announcement.
GameSpot also reported separate rumor-level corroboration from Jeff Grubb. On Giant Bomb’s Game Mess Mornings on June 24, 2024, Grubb said he had heard it was in the works for some time and had expected an earlier reveal that did not happen. He added that this did not mean it would never happen. His comments, too, were not confirmation from Sony. GameSpot’s June 25, 2024 report did not provide a Sony statement confirming the work.
Can you play PS3 games on a PS5 now?
Sony’s published PS5 FAQ, dated November 9, 2020, says PS5 does not play original PlayStation, PS2, or PS3 games. It says the console plays PS5 games and more than 99% of PS4 games; that PS4 figure does not apply to PS3 titles. Sony’s PlayStation Support guidance also says PS5 consoles do not support PS3 discs. The support page cited here is localized for Germany and Austria and was accessed October 8, 2026.

Streaming is different from playing a disc or running a game locally
GameSpot notes that PS3 games can be streamed through PS Plus. Streaming is distinct from native local play, and the report notes that performance issues may occur. It does not establish the current catalog, subscription requirements, or availability in any particular region, so check PlayStation’s current offering where you live.
What a future “select” feature has not clarified
The report does not establish which titles might be supported or whether games would run locally, be streamed, or use another method. It also gives no confirmed release date or details about purchases, entitlements, regions, save transfers, trophies, resolution, frame rate, or performance enhancements. Shpeshal_Nick specifically said he had no further information about a possible FPS boost.

How to play PS3 games today
If you want to use PS3 discs or play titles on original hardware, a used PlayStation 3 console is a practical option. This follows from Sony’s stated PS5 disc limitation; it is not an official Sony recommendation. The reported possibility of future selective compatibility does not change what Sony’s cited documentation currently says about PS5 support.
