Sony’s latest announced price increase took effect April 2, 2026, raising recommended prices for PS5, PS5 Pro and PlayStation Portal globally. In the U.S., the recommended prices are now $649.99 for PS5, $599.99 for PS5 Digital Edition and $899.99 for PS5 Pro. Sony cited continued pressure in the global economic landscape—not tariffs specifically—as the reason for the 2026 increase.

Did tariffs cause Sony’s 2026 price increase?
Sony did not specifically identify tariffs as the cause in its March 27, 2026 announcement. Isabelle Tomatis, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s vice president of global marketing, said: “With continued pressures in the global economic landscape, we’ve made the decision to increase the prices of PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal remote player globally.” That is a broad explanation, not a tariff-specific attribution.

Tariffs are relevant to the earlier U.S. price change, but that history should not be treated as Sony’s stated explanation for the later global increase. The available announcements provide no tariff cost breakdown or estimate of how much, if any, was passed on to buyers.
How the price changes unfolded
April 2025: selective regional adjustments
On April 13, 2025, Sony announced changes taking effect the following day in parts of Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), Australia and New Zealand. In Europe and the U.K., the listed console increase applied to PS5 Digital Edition; standard PS5 prices were unchanged. Australia and New Zealand saw listed increases for both standard PS5 and Digital Edition. PS5 Pro prices remained unchanged in the affected markets. Sony also lowered the PS5 Disc Drive RRP in the listed territories and cited high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates among the economic pressures.

August 2025: U.S. console prices
On August 20, 2025, Sony announced U.S. console price increases effective August 21. The new RRPs were $549.99 for PS5, $499.99 for PS5 Digital Edition and $749.99 for PS5 Pro. Sony described a “challenging economic environment” but did not name tariffs as the direct cause. The Associated Press reported that the increase was $50 for each of the three models, that game and accessory prices remained unchanged, and that Sony was diversifying its supply chain to alleviate U.S. tariff impacts. Sony’s announcement said it had no other market price changes to announce at that time.
April 2026: global console and Portal increase
Sony’s March 27, 2026 announcement set higher recommended prices for PS5, PS5 Pro and PlayStation Portal worldwide, effective April 2. This is the latest price change located for the product family and the first in this chronology that also raises the Portal’s recommended price.

What the announced prices mean when you shop
- Compare like with like: Match the model—PS5, Digital Edition or Pro—and your region’s currency before comparing prices.
- Treat RRP as a reference: Sony’s recommended price is not a live quote from a retailer. Stock, promotions and seller prices can differ, and the announcements do not provide a current inventory or deal check.
- Keep the tariff claim narrow: Tariffs appeared in reporting about U.S. supply-chain impacts in 2025; Sony’s published reason for its April 2026 global increase was continued pressure in the global economic landscape.
