Sony Interactive Entertainment said in February 2026 that it planned to close Bluepoint Games in March. The Austin studio made the PS5 remake of Demon’s Souls and other PlayStation remakes and remasters. The available reports establish the planned closure, but do not confirm whether it was completed or what happened to the studio’s employees and projects afterward.
Is Bluepoint Games shutting down?
Sony confirmed the planned closure to Game Developer on February 19, 2026. An internal email from Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Studio Business Group, reproduced by Gematsu, said the studio would close in March.
That is a planned closure announcement, not confirmation that the closure was completed. The reports cited here do not establish Bluepoint’s status after March 2026, the final disposition of its projects, or the outcomes for its employees.
Why did Sony say it was closing Bluepoint?
In the email reproduced by Gematsu, Hulst pointed to industry pressures: “Rising development costs, slowed industry growth, changing player behavior, and broader economic headwinds are making it harder to build games sustainably.” He then said, “As a result, we will be closing Bluepoint Games in March.” That is Sony’s stated explanation; it does not independently establish how much each factor contributed to the decision.

What happened to Bluepoint’s projects and employees?
Game Developer reported that about 70 employees faced layoffs in connection with the closure announcement. It also reported that Bluepoint had worked on a live-service God of War game until its cancellation in January 2025, and that Sony’s decision followed a recent business review. The report does not establish that the canceled game was Sony’s stated reason for closing the studio.
Hulst’s email, as reproduced by Gematsu, said Sony would try to find opportunities for some affected employees in its global studio network where possible. It did not say that all staff would be retained or reassigned. The cited reports do not document individual employment outcomes or the post-announcement fate of Bluepoint’s projects.

What was Bluepoint Games known for?
Founded in Austin, Texas, in 2006, Bluepoint built a reputation for remakes and remasters. Sony’s 2021 acquisition announcement cited work including Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, Shadow of the Colossus, Gravity Rush, and Demon’s Souls. In PlayStation’s welcome post, president Marco Thrush said the team was “close to 70” at the time. That is a historical headcount, not a current employee figure.
Sony announced the acquisition in September 2021, after a relationship it described as spanning more than 15 years. It said Bluepoint would become PlayStation Studios’ 16th studio. The acquisition announcement described the PS5 Demon’s Souls remake, released November 12, 2020, as the studio’s most recent release.

How successful was Bluepoint’s Demon’s Souls remake?
Sony reported more than 1.4 million copies sold as of September 19, 2021. Its FY25 fourth-quarter supplemental information records 1.4 million global cumulative sell-through units on that date. These are historical figures from 2021, not lifetime sales totals.
The remake remains Bluepoint’s most recognizable recent release: a PS5 launch title that brought the 2009 game to a new generation of PlayStation hardware. Sony’s announcement of Bluepoint’s closure does not, by itself, indicate a change to the game’s availability or support.
