Sony’s Game & Network Services (G&NS) segment recorded sales of ¥864.9 billion in the first quarter of fiscal 2024, up ¥93.0 billion, or 12%, year over year. The quarter ran from April 1 to June 30, 2024, and Sony announced the results on August 7. The growth was in segment sales—not Sony Group’s consolidated sales or PlayStation hardware unit sales. Sony also raised its full-year G&NS sales and operating-income forecasts.
What does Sony’s 12% gaming revenue growth measure?
It measures year-over-year sales growth for Sony’s Game & Network Services segment, which includes its PlayStation business. In its FY2024 Q1 presentation filed with the SEC, Sony reported G&NS sales of ¥864.9 billion, compared with ¥771.9 billion in the same quarter a year earlier. That is an increase of ¥93.0 billion, or 12%.
The figure is not a measure of PlayStation console sales alone. Sony said hardware sales declined because hardware unit sales decreased, even as total segment sales grew.
What drove the increase in G&NS sales?
Sony cited foreign-exchange effects, higher first-party game-software sales and higher network-services sales, mainly PlayStation Plus. It also named lower hardware sales, reflecting fewer hardware units sold, as a negative factor. Sony quantified the positive foreign-exchange impact on sales at ¥85.5 billion.

The ¥85.5 billion is Sony’s stated currency impact, not a complete explanation of the ¥93.0 billion net increase. Sony identified software and network services as additional contributors, but the presentation does not assign a separate yen amount to each factor.
How did operating income compare with sales growth?
G&NS operating income was ¥75.9 billion, up ¥16.0 billion, or 33%, year over year. Sony also reported adjusted OIBDA of ¥95.7 billion, up ¥19.8 billion, or 26%. Adjusted OIBDA is a separate, non-IFRS measure; it should not be treated as operating income.

Sony listed software and network-services sales among the positive factors for operating income and adjusted OIBDA. Higher costs were a negative factor for adjusted OIBDA. These profit measures tell a different part of the story from sales: segment sales increased 12%, while operating income increased 33%.
What full-year FY2024 forecasts did Sony raise?
In August 2024, Sony increased its G&NS sales forecast for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2025, from the ¥4.20 trillion forecast it had given in May to ¥4.32 trillion. The ¥120 billion increase was about 3%. It raised its operating-income forecast from ¥310 billion to ¥320 billion, a ¥10 billion increase, also about 3%.

Sony attributed the sales-forecast revision to foreign exchange. For the higher operating-income forecast, it cited improved profitability in network services, mainly PlayStation Plus.
How did the forecast compare with the eventual result?
The ¥4.32 trillion figure was Sony’s August 2024 forecast, not a reported full-year result. Sony later reported FY2024 G&NS sales of ¥4,670.0 billion in its FY2024 results, above that forecast. The later result provides a retrospective comparison; it was not available when Sony announced Q1.

What did Sony say about PlayStation user activity?
Sony’s Q&A summary said monthly active user growth had been aided by expansion of the PS5 install base, franchise software and third-party free-to-play titles. It also noted the contribution of franchise software to MAU growth. This is engagement context, not part of Sony’s direct explanation for the quarterly sales increase.
