Sometimes—but it depends on which Legion Go S and Steam Deck you compare, and which game you play. Published reviews show meaningful differences between the Legion Go S’s Ryzen Z1 Extreme and Z2 Go configurations, but they do not establish a consistent win over every Steam Deck model. The Go S’s clearest hardware advantage is its larger, 120 Hz screen; frame rates alone do not settle whether it is a worthwhile upgrade.
Which Legion Go S are you comparing?
The SteamOS Legion Go S is available in configurations with different processors, including AMD’s Ryzen Z1 Extreme and Ryzen Z2 Go. Results from one should not be treated as results for the other. Reviews tested a Z1 Extreme model with 32 GB of memory and a 1 TB SSD, and a Z2 Go model with 16 GB and a 512 GB SSD. Check the exact processor and memory in the listing before applying a review result to a device you may buy.
Lenovo describes the device as providing access to the Steam ecosystem, and Valve’s official SteamOS information lists the Legion Go S among supported devices. Check Lenovo’s Legion Go S product page and Valve’s current SteamOS information for current model and support details; availability and exact SKUs can vary by market.
What do the game tests show?
The strongest published numerical comparisons in this evidence are between the two Go S processors, not between the Go S and a Steam Deck. Tom’s Hardware’s 2025 tests found the Z1 Extreme ahead of the Z2 Go in several games at the tested settings:

| Game and test conditions | Reported Z1 Extreme lead over Z2 Go |
|---|---|
| Shadow of the Tomb Raider, medium settings, 800p | 8 fps (Tom’s Hardware, 2025) |
| Shadow of the Tomb Raider, medium settings, 1200p | 4 fps (Tom’s Hardware, 2025) |
| Cyberpunk 2077, Steam Deck preset, 800p | 11 fps (Tom’s Hardware, 2025) |
| Cyberpunk 2077, Steam Deck preset, 1200p | 5 fps (Tom’s Hardware, 2025) |
| Far Cry 6 and Red Dead Redemption 2, 800p | 14 fps (Tom’s Hardware, 2025; reported lead in its tests) |
| Borderlands 3, medium settings, 800p | 18 fps (Tom’s Hardware, 2025) |
These are review-specific gaps between Go S configurations. They are not a measured advantage over a Steam Deck, and they should not be converted into a universal percentage or promise about other games.
Other reviews illustrate how much resolution, preset, and upscaling can change the result. TechRadar reported 32 fps in Assassin’s Creed Mirage at 720p on its highest preset and 21 fps at 1200p; 39 fps in Black Myth: Wukong at 720p medium and 19 fps at 1200p medium; and 37 fps in Doom: The Dark Ages at 1080p with the handheld preset and FSR Balanced. These are figures from TechRadar’s own review tests, not directly comparable with another outlet’s results.

Tom’s Guide tested a Z1 Extreme model with 32 GB of memory and a 1 TB SSD in Doom: The Dark Ages: it reported roughly 25 fps at 1200p medium with FSR frame generation off, around 35 fps with FSR enabled, and 56–61 fps at 800p with FSR. Those results describe that game and test setup; they are not a Steam Deck head-to-head.
Does SteamOS make the Go S faster?
In Tom’s Hardware’s 2025 tests of the Z2 Go, its SteamOS sample ran 4–15 fps ahead of the Windows 11 sample across the tested games and resolutions. The comparison was not an isolated operating-system test: the Windows device used a custom 40-watt profile on AC power, while the SteamOS device used its Performance profile. It supports a result for those samples and conditions, not a guarantee that SteamOS always improves performance over Windows.

How does the hardware compare with a Steam Deck?
The reviewed Z1 Extreme Legion Go S has an 8-inch, 1920 × 1200 IPS touchscreen with a maximum refresh rate of 120 Hz. It also has a microSD slot, two USB-C ports, a 3.5 mm headphone jack, a 55.5 Wh battery, and a 1 TB M.2 2242 SSD. Tom’s Hardware measured that Go S at 1.61 pounds and its comparison Steam Deck OLED at 1.41 pounds. The larger screen and higher refresh-rate ceiling are clear distinctions; the measured Go S was also heavier than that OLED model.
Tom’s Guide found the SteamOS interface quick to navigate and familiar to Steam Deck users, with settings for refresh rate, frame-rate limit, thermal power limit, and scaling. That is a review observation about navigation, not evidence that every game works. Compatibility can depend on a title’s technical requirements, including anti-cheat. Check Valve’s current per-game compatibility information for games you care about, and confirm status close to purchase or play.

Is it worth upgrading from a Steam Deck?
A Go S may make sense if you want its larger, high-refresh display or are considering a specific Z1 Extreme configuration for games where its performance is demonstrated at your preferred settings. The evidence here does not show a controlled, matched benchmark suite against every Steam Deck version, so it cannot establish that the Go S is faster overall. Tom’s Guide’s review likewise says Steam Deck owners satisfied with their device need not upgrade.
Before deciding, compare the exact Go S processor and memory with your current Deck, then look at the games you actually play, their compatibility status, resolution and quality settings, power mode, and whether you use the handheld on battery or AC. Screen size, weight, grip comfort, controls, battery life, storage, and the current price of the exact regional SKU can matter as much as a frame-rate result. SteamOS support and game compatibility can change after the 2025 reviews, so check Valve’s current information rather than treating those reviews as a guarantee for today’s software.
