It is over, as is the accompanying Steam Winter Sale, which ended January 5, 2023. This retrospective covers how voting worked, who could take part, all 11 category winners and what is—and is not—known about the sale’s deals.
How Steam Awards 2022 voting worked
Eligible players signed in to Steam, opened the Steam Awards page and voted in any or all of the 11 categories before the deadline. Valve announced the winners one hour after voting closed. Five finalists in each category had been announced in advance.
- Sign in to a non-limited Steam account.
- Visit the Steam Awards page and review the finalists in a category.
- Choose a nominee in any or all categories before January 3, 2023, at 9 a.m. Pacific.
Voting is no longer available. Valve’s official FAQ says, “All accounts that are non-limited can vote in the Steam Awards.” It also confirms that voters received one random Steam Awards Trading Card for each category they voted in.

What Best Game on the Go meant
Best Game on the Go was the new category for 2022. Valve described it as recognizing games people enjoy playing on portable devices. Steam Deck was relevant context for portable PC gaming, but this was a game category—not an award for the handheld itself.

Steam Winter Sale 2022 dates and deal information
The Winter Sale ran from December 22, 2022, at 10 a.m. Pacific until January 5, 2023, at 10 a.m. Pacific. Its final two days came after Awards voting had ended. Valve described the sale as offering discounts on thousands of games and said shoppers could give games or use Steam gift cards.
The official sale announcement establishes the dates and broad scale of the promotion, but does not provide a game-by-game price list. It therefore cannot substantiate particular titles as the “best deals,” specific discount percentages or historical prices. Those claims require dated, game-specific price evidence rather than inference from the sale announcement.
