The accounts differ by 192 users. The available reports do not explain the discrepancy, so neither exact count should be treated as a definitively settled official total. The shared conclusion is clear: Steam’s concurrent-user count topped 28 million that day.
What does “concurrent users” mean?
Concurrent users are the people online on Steam at the same time. The figure measures activity across the platform; it is not a count of people actively playing games. Steam-wide totals also differ from the player counts or peaks reported for individual games.

Is January 9 still Steam’s all-time record?
No. SteamDB’s Steam app chart lists an all-time peak of 42,686,616 concurrent users on March 29, 2026, surpassing the January 2022 milestone. SteamDB is a third-party service and says it is not affiliated with Valve or Steam. Its chart is live and can change; SteamDB says its site times are UTC, current top-game data updates every five minutes, and other game data updates every ten minutes. What was behind the 2022 growth?
Games industry analyst Daniel Ahmad described the broader trend this way in PC Gamer’s January 10, 2022 report: “Concurrent users saw strong growth during 2020, due to the impact of COVID-19, but it’s clear that growth also continued to persist in 2021.” His comment concerns growth across those years; it does not establish a single cause for the January 9 peak.
