In December 2025, Insider Gaming senior editor Mike Straw reported that anonymous sources believed it would launch with Valve’s hardware in spring 2026. Later coverage said Valve announced Steam Machine release details without announcing Half-Life 3, so the prediction did not materialize.
Where the Half-Life 3 launch rumor came from
The claim originated with Mike Straw on the Insider Gaming Weekly podcast. In coverage published December 16, 2025, Ars Technica quoted Straw saying, “Everybody I’ve talked to are still adamant that this is a game that will be a launch title with the Steam Machine.” He attributed that confidence to people who had previously provided information, but did not identify them. Straw’s reported window was spring 2026 for Half-Life 3, Steam Machine, Steam Frame and Steam Controller. Engadget and PC Guide also covered the podcast claim, but they were reporting the same underlying statement—not providing independent confirmation from separate named sources. Engadget PC Guide
Why “insiders are adamant” did not mean it was confirmed
“Adamant” described Straw’s anonymous sources’ confidence; it was not a statement from Valve. Ars Technica also reported that Straw had previously heard a date he did not consider reliable enough to publish. That date passed, and Straw suggested dates might have been circulated to identify leakers. He described the later 2026 timing as subject to change. Ars Technica

Contemporary coverage likewise treated the connection as speculation, noting Valve had not officially announced Half-Life 3. Repetition of Straw’s podcast claim across several outlets did not turn it into multiple independent tips or an official confirmation. PCGamesN
What later happened with the launch prediction
A June 22, 2026 report by DSOGaming said Valve had announced Steam Machine price and release details without announcing a new Half-Life game. The outlet concluded that Half-Life 3 was not a launch game for the machine. This is later secondary reporting, rather than a direct Valve statement about the game, but it means the specific spring 2026 launch-title prediction did not come true as reported. DSOGaming

The reports do not establish that Half-Life 3 was finished, that Valve had confirmed it, or that a component-price issue caused a delay. Hardware timing uncertainty and the game rumor appeared in coverage, but that does not prove a cause-and-effect link between component costs and the game’s status.

No. The rumor paired the game with the Steam Machine’s launch; it did not establish exclusivity. In a July 20, 2026 GamesRadar report relaying an interview with Bloomberg, Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais said, “Restricting where people can play a game I don’t think is a great model, at least for us.” He added that Valve was “much more interested in having the whole PC catalog as our ‘launch exclusive.’” That gives context for Valve’s approach to the hardware, but does not confirm or rule out an unannounced Half-Life game.
