Yes—the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie was promoted with a playable Sega Genesis cartridge. It contains a brief Sonic-and-Shadow minigame alongside film-related materials, rather than a full commercial game. Reporting and video document the cartridge, but do not establish that it was sold to the public.
What is on the Genesis cartridge?
IGN’s November 22, 2024 walkthrough shows a promotional cartridge with several menu sections: character voice clips, a poster section, and an unlockable minigame. In the minigame, Sonic runs from Shadow. Nintendo Wire likewise described it as a promotional cartridge containing electronic press kit materials and a minigame, and reported that it worked on original Genesis hardware.
The available descriptions support calling it a small interactive promotion—not a complete or retail-quality Sonic the Hedgehog 3 game. See IGN’s cartridge walkthrough and Nintendo Wire’s contemporaneous report.
What does the cheat-code easter egg reveal?
IGN reports that entering the familiar Sonic 3 cheat-code sequence in the minigame unlocks a “Trailer?” menu item and displays November 25, 2024—the date the next film trailer was due. That date is a historical promotional reveal, not a current trailer announcement.

Could fans buy the cartridge?
Public retail availability is unverified. The sources describe the cartridge as a promotional press item, and do not show that Paramount or SEGA offered it through ordinary retail channels. They also do not establish how many were made, how they were distributed, or current resale prices. A marketplace listing alone would not prove that a copy came from an authorized public release.
Collectors looking for a way to display a Genesis cartridge can search for a cartridge display case, but that is an accessory search—not a way to obtain this promotional item. Check the seller’s listing for cartridge fit, display or mounting style, and whether the sale includes a cartridge or only the case.

How does the cartridge connect to the film?
Paramount’s official film page describes Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails facing Shadow and lists the movie as a 2024 release. The cartridge’s Shadow chase and trailer-date easter egg tie its short interactive element to the film campaign.
For dated context beyond the cartridge, SEGA Corporation reported in January 2025 that the film had reached $425 million in worldwide box office, compared with $405 million for the preceding film; this is the figure in that announcement, not a current tally. Paramount announced that the movie would be available on Paramount+ in the United States and Canada beginning February 18, 2025. That regional announcement does not confirm today’s catalog in every country. JAKKS Pacific also announced a global merchandise agreement with SEGA of America for the film, which establishes a licensed relationship but not current product stock.
