Spoilers for the full story and all endings. A walkthrough by Prima Games documents five endings in Somerville: Resignation, Resignation Reprise, Family First, War of the Worlds, and Understanding. One branches in Chapter 13; the other four depend on how you answer the alien color sequences in Chapter 14. The route instructions and immediate outcomes below follow that guide, while the game’s official store descriptions establish the premise but do not decode the aliens’ signals or declare a canon ending.
What is Somerville about?
Somerville is a sci-fi adventure about a family separated during an alien invasion. Jumpship’s official Xbox listing describes searching for the family, exploring the devastation, solving puzzles in an altered landscape, and learning about the visitors’ motives and methods. It says the game has multiple endings. The PlayStation listing gives the same broad premise and also notes that subtitles cover the main story and main characters only.

That premise is the firmest basis for interpreting the narrative: the player is trying to reunite a family while moving through an invaded landscape. Jumpship’s Xbox description puts the goal this way: “In the wake of catastrophe you must find the means to make your family whole again.” The official listings do not provide a definitive explanation of the visitors’ language, the colors, or the significance of every final image.
For development context, Xbox Wire’s 2021 announcement called the game “an original IP by Chris Olsen, built in collaboration with Dino Patti” and described it as a hand-crafted narrative in a vivid rural landscape after catastrophe. Jumpship later said its setting was inspired by the English countryside and that the story takes place in winter, in an official art retrospective.

How many endings does Somerville have?
Grant Testa’s Prima Games walkthrough, published November 18, 2022, documents five routes: Resignation, Resignation Reprise, Family First, War of the Worlds, and Understanding. Its Chapter 13 route is optional; the other four are in Chapter 14. These are the guide’s ending names and route descriptions, not an official developer ranking or statement that one ending is canon. The walkthrough is the source for the choices and immediate visuals below.
| Ending | Branch point | Guide-reported route or outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Resignation | Chapter 13 | Sit with the mother-and-son image rather than dispelling it with blue power; the guide reports a return to a prior checkpoint afterward. |
| Resignation Reprise | Chapter 14 | Mirror the repeated blue-blue-red sequence; a path to the family’s house opens. |
| Family First | Chapter 14 | After the opening signals, answer blue-blue-blue, then activate blue, red, and purple; the guide describes the family appearing inside a sphere. |
| War of the Worlds | Chapter 14 | Choose purple at the first blue-red-blue sequence; the guide associates the route with choosing violence. |
| Understanding | Chapter 14 | Follow a longer pattern of blue, red, and purple responses; the guide reports the monoliths disintegrating and the father facing his family. |
How to get each Somerville ending
The sequences below use “blue,” “red,” and “purple” as the color inputs described in the Prima guide. Follow the signal-response order carefully; these are route instructions from a third-party walkthrough, not a canonical translation of alien communication.
Resignation — Chapter 13
- In the third section of Chapter 13, obtain the flare and reach the image of the mother and son sitting on a couch, resembling the opening scene.
- To continue the chapter, use the blue power to dispel the image.
- To take the Resignation branch instead, sit with the image. Prima reports that the game returns the player to a prior checkpoint after this ending.
Resignation Reprise — Chapter 14
- Link hands with the people beside the father and begin responding to the three monoliths.
- Answer the first alien pattern, blue-red-blue, in kind.
- When the aliens send blue-blue-red, mirror blue-blue-red each time the pattern is repeated. The guide says this opens a path to the family’s house and leads to Resignation Reprise.
Family First — Chapter 14
- Answer the initial blue-red-blue pattern in kind.
- When the aliens send blue-blue-red, respond with blue-blue-blue.
- When the mother and son appear inside a sphere, activate the lights in this order: blue, red, purple. The guide identifies this route as Family First.
War of the Worlds — Chapter 14
- At the first blue-red-blue alien sequence, choose purple instead of matching the pattern.
- Prima says this leads to War of the Worlds and associates it with choosing violence. That association describes the guide’s reading of the route, not an established moral or political explanation from the developers.
Understanding — Chapter 14
- Answer the opening blue-red-blue sequence in kind.
- When the aliens send blue-blue-red, respond with blue-blue-blue, followed by three purple inputs.
- For the next alien pattern—four blues followed by two purples—the guide’s response is blue-blue-blue, red, purple-purple.
- For the final alien pattern—purple-purple-purple, red, purple-purple, red-red-red—respond with blue-blue-blue, red, purple-purple, red-red-red.
- Prima reports that the monoliths disintegrate and the father stands across from his family. This is the guide’s account of the immediate ending image.
What does the Somerville ending mean?
The story’s broad premise and the goal of finding the family are explicit in the official store descriptions. Beyond that, it helps to separate what the game shows from what a viewer infers. The walkthrough reports the route names, choices, and immediate images; it does not establish a definitive meaning for the signals or final scenes. The family-focused imagery in Family First, for example, does not by itself confirm the family’s deeper status or explain what has happened to them.
A contemporaneous Gamer Journalist interpretation by Hadley Vincent explores possibilities involving the invasion’s timeline, soldiers, simulations, human captives, and the outcomes. Those are speculative readings, not confirmed plot facts. The official sources referenced here do not settle whether the aliens’ behavior can be translated into a single message, whether one route represents the true ending, or whether the final images should be read literally.

What to know if an ending route seems stuck
Prima’s author notes encountering a bug while pursuing the Resignation section and describes returning to a prior checkpoint. That is an individual report, not evidence that the route is generally broken. If the scene does not advance, reloading the checkpoint and repeating the choice is a reasonable recovery step; the guide does not establish a universal fix.
