How can you play Sonic Unleashed on PC? Unleashed Recompiled is an unofficial fan-made port of the Xbox 360 version for Windows and Linux. It raises the game’s default frame-rate cap to 60 FPS and lets players choose higher targets or unlock the frame rate—but it does not include the game. You need files from a supported US or EU Xbox 360 copy, and high frame rates can still cause glitches or stutters.
What Unleashed Recompiled is—and what it isn’t
Unleashed Recompiled is an unofficial PC port made through static recompilation of the Xbox 360 version of Sonic Unleashed. The project converts the original game code and shaders into C++ and HLSL, with credit to XenonRecomp and XenosRecomp. It supports Windows and Linux and adds PC-focused features such as higher resolutions, ultrawide displays, an options menu, achievements, custom localization, and modding support.

It is not an official PC release and is not a bundle containing the game. The project does not provide the original game assets: you must supply files from your own supported Xbox 360 copy.
What the frame-rate options actually do
The game’s default cap in Unleashed Recompiled is 60 FPS. Higher frame-rate targets and an unlocked option are available in the in-game options menu. That is a choice, not a guarantee that a particular computer will sustain a given rate: the project README provides no configuration-specific performance benchmarks.

- Sonic the Hedgehog returns in this platform for Xbox 360 with 2D and 3D elements
The project says it has fixed many glitches that can occur at higher frame rates, but not all issues are gone. The README considers the game beatable above 60 FPS; some optional content may require limiting the game to 60 FPS.
Expect occasional stutters even on powerful hardware
Some pauses come from synchronous work in the original game, such as loading object layers, spawning particle systems, or playing several sound effects. The README says some can last almost 10 milliseconds even on powerful hardware. At a 120 FPS target, a pause of that length is especially noticeable because each frame has a shorter time budget.

For context, the project describes the Xbox 360 version as targeting 30 FPS and the PlayStation 3 version as uncapped, while noting that actual rates and time steps varied. Those console descriptions do not predict the performance of the recompiled game on your PC.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use files from a supported Xbox 360 copy
You need an Xbox 360, an Xbox 360 storage device, and Sonic Unleashed for Xbox 360. The README supports retail discs and digital copies, requires the title update, and lists US and EU editions as supported. The Japanese edition is unsupported, and PlayStation 3 files cannot be used.

- Twice the fun: Play as both Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic in the ultimate Sonic experience. Master the moves of Classic Sonic in the side scrolling 2D tracks and take on Modern Sonic in the stunning 3D tracks.
- The best just got better: Chosen from three eras of Sonic in HD gaming, a variety of iconic environments have been revisited, recreated and fully re-imagined with stunning results.
- Exclusive Nintendo 3DS content: With new and exclusive environments including an unlockable 'special stage', there's a whole new universe of adventures. Immerse yourself in Sonic's world like never before.
Dump or otherwise obtain the game files from your Xbox 360, then provide them to the port’s installer. Modified source files can prevent installation. The Adventure Pack DLC is optional but highly recommended by the project; it includes what the README describes as high-quality lighting for the entire game.
Choose the file-transfer route that matches your storage
The README documents both USB-storage and Xbox 360 hard-drive dumping guides. A transfer cable or compatible SATA-to-USB adapter is needed only if you are dumping from an Xbox 360 hard drive—not for every installation route. The project notes that the latest black cable revision works with original Xbox 360 and Xbox 360 S|E hard drives, while the first gray revision works only with original Xbox 360 hard drives.

Which version should you play?
| Consideration | Unleashed Recompiled on PC | Original Xbox 360 version |
|---|---|---|
| Platform | Windows or Linux, including a native Linux build usable on Steam Deck | Xbox 360 |
| Frame rate | 60 FPS cap by default, with higher targets and an unlocked option; high-rate glitches and stutters can remain | The project README describes it as targeting 30 FPS |
| Game files | You must provide files from a supported US or EU Xbox 360 copy | Requires the Xbox 360 game copy |
| Measured PC performance | No configuration-specific benchmark is provided by the project README | Not stated in the project README |
Choose the recompiled version if you want to run the Xbox 360 game on Windows or Linux and already have a supported copy whose files you can extract. Stick with the original console version if you do not want to manage a file dump or would rather play on Xbox 360. The project warns that demanding Werehog combat and DLC stages may challenge a target frame rate, including on Steam Deck.
Platform and project limits
Windows and Linux are the project’s current supported platforms. macOS is not currently on the roadmap, though the project says contributions toward support are welcome. The team also says it has no current plan to recompile other Xbox 360 games or other Sonic games.
