Sony has announced a feature film based on the Helldivers game franchise, but the cast and release date have since changed in later reports. Sony’s May 2026 announcement named Jason Momoa and set a November 2027 theatrical debut; September and October reports say Alan Ritchson is now attached and the date has moved to June 9, 2028. Sony’s cited pages still list the earlier date, and they do not confirm that filming has begun.
When does the Helldivers movie come out?
The latest date in the reports reviewed is June 9, 2028. ComingSoon reported the change on September 30, 2026, and GamesRadar+ followed on October 1, attributing the update to Sony’s schedule change reported by Deadline. That date has not appeared on the Sony pages reviewed here: Sony’s August 12, 2026 PlayStation announcement still listed November 10, 2027. Treat June 9, 2028 as a reported update, not a date confirmed on those Sony pages.

Sony’s earlier CinemaCon account, published May 19, 2026, had announced a worldwide theatrical debut in November 2027. The August PlayStation release specified November 10.
Who is starring in the Helldivers movie?
The casting information changed after Sony’s announcement. At CinemaCon on May 19, Sony named Jason Momoa as the film’s star. TheWrap reported on September 18 that Alan Ritchson was in talks to play one of the Helldivers. ComingSoon’s September 30 report described Ritchson as starring. These are later trade and entertainment-news reports, not a replacement-cast announcement on the Sony pages reviewed.

TheWrap also identified Justin Lin as director and Hutch Parker, Asad Qizilbash, and Lin as producers. Sony’s CinemaCon account said Lin discussed the film, but the detailed credits above come from TheWrap’s report.
What is the Helldivers film about?
Sony says the feature is based on Arrowhead Game Studios’ Helldivers video game franchise. The announcement does not provide a plot, named characters, rating, or production schedule. No specific storyline should be treated as confirmed from that announcement.

Is the film based on Helldivers 2?
The official wording describes the movie as based on the Helldivers franchise rather than identifying a particular game installment. Helldivers 2 is the franchise’s cooperative third-person shooter, available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Sony Interactive Entertainment said it had more than 22.9 million players across those platforms as of August 9, 2026; that is a player count, not a sales figure.
Sony’s August 12, 2026 announcement also said Helldivers 2 joined the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog for Extra and Premium members. In that announcement, Sony Interactive Entertainment Senior Vice President of Marketing Mary Yee discussed the catalog addition, not the film.

Has Sony started filming the Helldivers movie?
The Sony announcement reviewed confirms the adaptation and its original release window, but does not say that principal photography has begun. The later cast and date reports cited here do not establish a filming start either. The film’s production stage is therefore not confirmed by these sources.
