Sony’s PlayStation 5 Pro is not still on the way: it launched worldwide on November 7, 2024. It is a disc-less, 2TB version of the PS5 with upgraded graphics hardware and AI upscaling, but the benefits depend on whether each game has been enhanced for Pro. Sony’s recommended prices also rose in 2026, making the price gap with the standard PS5 an important part of the decision.

Is the PS5 Pro already out?

Yes. Sony announced PS5 Pro on September 10, 2024, and said it launched worldwide on November 7, 2024. Sony’s launch announcement listed a U.S. MSRP of $699.99, but that is historical launch pricing, not the current recommended price.

What is different about PS5 Pro?

Sony describes three main graphics changes: an upgraded GPU, advanced ray tracing, and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), an AI-driven upscaling technology.

  • GPU: Sony said PS5 Pro has 67% more compute units than the PS5 available at the time of the announcement.
  • Memory: Sony said its memory is 28% faster than that then-current PS5.
  • Rendering: Sony says those changes enable up to 45% faster rendering. This is Sony’s stated figure, not an independent benchmark.
  • Ray tracing: Sony says the console can cast rays at double, and at times triple, the speed of the current PS5.
  • PSSR: The system uses AI upscaling to boost image resolution.

These are manufacturer claims and comparisons to the PS5 at the time Sony announced Pro; the official material cited here does not provide independent performance measurements. More importantly, Sony says Pro-enhanced features are available only in selected PS5 games and vary by game. A higher-spec console does not mean every PS5 game gets the same visual or frame-rate improvement.

How much does PS5 Pro cost now?

Sony’s March 27, 2026 announcement set updated recommended retail prices effective April 2, 2026. These are Sony’s recommended prices, not guaranteed prices at every retailer.

Market PS5 Pro recommended retail price
United States $899.99
United Kingdom £789.99
Europe €899.99
Japan ¥137,980

At launch in September 2024, Sony listed prices of $699.99 in the U.S., £699.99 in the U.K., €799.99 in Europe, and ¥119,980 in Japan, including tax. Those figures are historical. For other territories, Sony advises checking local retailers or PlayStation Direct where available; local pricing and retailer offers can differ.

Does PS5 Pro have a disc drive?

No. PS5 Pro launched as a disc-less console. It includes a 2TB SSD, one DualSense wireless controller, and Astro’s Playroom pre-installed. Sony says its PS5 Disc Drive can be purchased separately and added to the console. If you use physical games or Blu-ray discs, include the cost and availability of that separate drive when comparing options.

Which games are enhanced for PS5 Pro?

Enhancement is title-specific, so check the game listing or current PlayStation information for the games you actually play. Sony’s November 4, 2024 launch preview described more than 50 enhanced games at launch and named examples including Alan Wake 2, Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Baldur’s Gate 3, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Gran Turismo 7, Hogwarts Legacy, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and The Last of Us Part II Remastered. That launch sample is not a definitive current compatibility list.

On February 27, 2026, Sony announced an upgraded PSSR version rolling out globally in the coming weeks. Sony said PSSR had been used to boost effective resolution in over 50 PS5 Pro titles by that date, and identified Resident Evil Requiem as the first title using the more advanced version in that announcement. This is a dated Sony count; support and implementation can differ by game, and newer releases may change the picture.

PS4 games are a separate case

Sony says Game Boost can apply to more than 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 games playable on PS5 Pro. It also offers Enhanced Image Quality for selected PS4 titles. The figure describes the feature’s potential scope, not a count of games individually tested for improvement. These capabilities should not be confused with native PS5 Pro enhancements, which are limited to selected enhanced PS5 games and vary by title.

What comes with the console, and what accessories work?

The package includes the 2TB console, one DualSense wireless controller, and Astro’s Playroom pre-installed. Sony said PS5 Pro is compatible with PS5 accessories then available, including PlayStation VR2, PlayStation Portal, DualSense Edge, the Access controller, Pulse Elite, and Pulse Explore. Confirm current product listings for exact compatibility and availability before buying an accessory.

How to decide between PS5 and PS5 Pro

The Pro makes most sense to evaluate against your games, screen, and budget—not just its spec sheet. Before paying the higher recommended price, check:

  • Your games: Look for a specific PS5 Pro enhancement and what it changes, such as resolution, ray tracing, or performance options. A title without a Pro enhancement may not deliver the upgrade you expect.
  • Your display and priorities: Consider whether you value sharper image quality, smoother performance, or a particular balance, and whether your display can show the difference you want.
  • Your physical media: The console has no built-in disc drive. Add the separately sold PS5 Disc Drive if you need one.
  • Your storage needs: Pro includes a 2TB SSD; compare that capacity with your current setup and game library.
  • Your existing accessories: Sony lists compatibility with several PS5 accessories, which may let you keep equipment you already own.
  • The actual price gap: Compare current local prices for both consoles and any separate drive you need. Sony’s U.S. recommended retail price for Pro is $899.99 from April 2, 2026, but retailer prices may differ.

Sony’s published specifications establish what it says the hardware can do, but they do not by themselves establish how much a particular player will gain. That depends on game support, implementation, display, and how much the price difference matters to you.
