Sony announced in May 2024 that Helldivers 2 players on Steam would have to link a PlayStation Network (PSN) account, then canceled the plan before its announced enforcement dates. The dispute was driven in large part by players who had bought the game in places where PSN was unavailable. That canceled policy is separate from a UK Steam-store availability issue Sony acknowledged in September 2026.
What was Sony’s Helldivers 2 PSN requirement?
At launch, linking a Steam copy of Helldivers 2 to a PSN account was temporarily optional because of technical issues, according to the game’s official FAQ. The FAQ said those issues had been resolved and the grace period was ending. Sony’s planned change had separate dates for new and existing Steam players:
- New Steam players: The linking option would appear from May 6, 2024.
- Existing Steam players: A mandatory login would begin May 30, with account linking required by June 4.
Those dates described the plan before Sony reversed it; the requirement was not ultimately enforced on Steam players under that update.
Why did players object?
It was a new requirement after launch
Players had been able to play on Steam without linking an account, so the announced change felt like a new condition imposed after purchase. Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt accepted responsibility for how the launch had been handled. As Ars Technica reported, he said he had chosen to disable account linking so players could play, but had not made the requirement clear enough.

PSN was not available everywhere the game had been sold
The larger access concern came from players in countries and territories where PSN was not available. They feared they could lose access to a game they had bought on Steam if linking became mandatory. Ars Technica reported that the Steam listing was delisted in 177 countries during the dispute; PC Gamer reported that regional sales restrictions remained after Sony’s reversal. These are reports about the May 2024 episode, not a current country-by-country availability list.
The review backlash was immediate
PCWorld reported that the Steam listing received more than 80,000 negative reviews in the 24 hours after the announcement. The outlet also reported that Steam granted some refunds even when players exceeded the usual two-hour playtime threshold.

What reason did Sony give for linking accounts?
The official FAQ presented linking as a way to use PlayStation’s support infrastructure to report bad actors and appeal bans or suspensions. That was Sony’s stated rationale; it does not establish that mandatory linking was the only way to provide those functions.
What happened to the requirement?
On May 5, 2024, PlayStation announced that the May 6 update would not proceed. Its statement said the change would have required linking for new players and, beginning May 30, existing players, then confirmed it would not move forward. The cancellation came before the dates for the planned requirements took effect.

Do Helldivers 2 PC players still need a PSN account?
The May 2024 Steam account-linking requirement was canceled. The cited announcement does not support treating that planned update as a rule that was enforced on Steam players. It also does not establish every current account or sign-in requirement for every platform or situation.

Account linking and Steam-store availability are different issues. In September 2026, GamesRadar reported that Helldivers 2 and Horizon: Forbidden West had become unavailable for purchase on Steam in the UK. A Sony Interactive Entertainment spokesperson said the company was aware of an issue affecting selected UK Steam listings and was working with Valve to address it. That report does not confirm whether the issue has since been fixed or establish live availability in every country. Check the Steam listing for your region for current purchase availability; the UK store issue does not show that Sony reinstated the canceled PSN plan.
