Source of Madness is a dark action roguelite whose most distinctive feature is the way it generates and animates its grotesque enemies. That novelty gives the game a strong identity, but published reviews are mixed on whether its magic combat stays readable and its repeated runs stay engaging. It is most appealing to players who value strange cosmic-horror imagery and are willing to tolerate some combat and progression friction.
What reviewers find distinctive about Source of Madness
Developed by Carry Castle and published by Thunderful Publishing, Source of Madness sends an Acolyte through the Lovecraftian-inspired Loam Lands. Its environments change through procedural generation, and the publisher highlights monsters that are procedurally generated and animated with neural-network AI. That makes enemy encounters, rather than a fixed bestiary alone, the central hook. Steam’s feature description and Thunderful’s game page describe those systems.

Review coverage recognizes the appeal of the atmosphere, art, and fresh-looking enemy encounters. But unusual enemies can also be harder to read: Meristation’s May 12, 2022 review says erratic behavior can make patterns and hitboxes difficult to judge. In other words, the same unpredictability that supplies visual novelty may make a fight less legible than a conventional action game’s carefully telegraphed enemy designs.
How the magic combat and progression work
The official feature list describes close-combat magic, exploration, loot management, and a skill tree offering abilities, classes, and spells. Meristation describes equipping rings and casting with controller triggers. Its reviewer found movement, dodging, and attack cooldowns took practice, while also judging the combat responsive but shallow. These are reviewer’s assessments, not guarantees that every player will have the same experience.

#1 Best Overall
- Ambulance Life: A Paramedic Simulator Game, PS5
The game’s run-based structure asks players to balance immediate survival with longer-term character development. That can suit players who enjoy learning an action system over repeated attempts, but review excerpts collected by Metacritic also cite repetition and grinding among the drawbacks. The important question is whether evolving encounters and character options keep a run fresh enough for you; the available reviews do not establish that the progression works equally well for every player.

Metacritic’s review page includes both praise for the game’s atmosphere, art, and unusual encounters and criticism of repetition, combat, controls, interface, and grinding. Aggregated scores summarize varied opinions; they do not identify which tradeoffs will matter most to an individual player.
Who is likely to enjoy it—and who may not
- A good fit: players drawn to cosmic-horror atmosphere, unconventional creature design, and procedural variation between encounters.
- A more uncertain fit: players who need enemy attacks and hitboxes to be consistently easy to parse, or who expect combat depth to be the game’s main strength.
- Think twice if: repetition and grinding quickly wear you down. Those concerns appear in review coverage, though their impact depends on how much you enjoy repeated runs.
Compared with the qualities many players seek in roguelites, the useful dividing line is not simply whether a game has procedural generation. It is whether the resulting variation meaningfully changes the moment-to-moment encounters, whether magic combat remains responsive and legible, and whether the atmosphere is compelling enough to make repeated attempts worthwhile. Published reviews suggest Source of Madness is strongest on visual identity and atmosphere, with more divided responses to combat clarity and repetition; this is a synthesis of reviews, not a direct comparison test against other games.
