Starfield Update 1.16.236 is the Free Lanes update, released April 7, 2026, for all platforms, according to Bethesda’s official patch notes. It adds cruise-mode travel within star systems, new ship and equipment customization, outpost and exploration features, and a long list of fixes. It has since been superseded: Bethesda published Update 1.16.242 in May and lists Update 1.16.244 on June 11, 2026.
What Free Lanes adds
Travel through a star system
Cruise mode lets you travel through open space or head toward points of interest between planets within a star system. It is the update’s central travel addition; Bethesda’s notes do not describe it as interstellar travel between star systems.
Weapons, armor, and ship upgrades
- X-Tech crafting support for weapons and armor, with additional quality tiers and rank 4 legendary effects.
- Upgrade modules that improve one attribute on a weapon or spacesuit, plus new skins for selected weapons.
- A buildable ship-optimization terminal where you can spend X-Tech to improve ship attributes.
- Ship-equipment schematics that can be used in the ship builder after discovery.
- Legendary enemies with new modifiers. Gameplay options let players control when these enemies start appearing.
Progression, inventory, and outposts
- Starborn powers can be upgraded with Quantum Essence. Essence can be added to Favorites, and destroying Starborn ships now rewards it.
- The Quantum Entanglement Device allows some items to be transferred through the Unity.
- A Database menu tracks locations, resources, and recipes based on what the character knows.
- Outpost additions include a Shared Outpost Container, production-rate information, and more precise placement.
New places, characters, and customization
- The Moon Jumper vehicle, the player home Château des Étoiles, Colony Wars Action Heroes, and buildable display cases.
- Muria Siarkiewicz as a crew member and Anchorpoint Station in the Algorab system.
- New dungeons, space encounters, and points of interest; Bethesda also adjusted planetary point-of-interest distribution and cooldown timers.
- A longer third-person ship-camera distance, an Always Show Landing Camera setting, and more Rev-8 photo-mode poses.
Bethesda also announced that the Terran Armada DLC is available. That is a separate add-on, not a feature that the patch notes say is included with the update.

- Interface: Bethesda adjusted Weapons Workbench placement, Ship Repair UI visuals, and Large Font Mode interfaces in Ship Builder and Outpost. It also addressed ship renaming for unique or stolen ships, duplicate ship models persisting on landing pads after modifications, access to the furnished Hopetech All-In-One Berth 2×2, PC Escape behavior while renaming a workbench item, and a Scan Jammer description typo.
- Shattered Space: The Oracle has updated music.
- Creations: Fixed an Ashta spawning issue in “A Perfect Recipe,” updated the Plushie Andreja description, enabled plushies to be placed in cases for “At Hell’s Gate,” adjusted placement distance between two plushie-case variants, and made Allied Winter Camo Skins visible in the Creations menu when installed.
Is Update 1.16.236 the latest Starfield patch?
No. Bethesda’s May 14, 2026 notes for Update 1.16.242 establish a later release, and its official Starfield news index lists Update 1.16.244, dated June 11, 2026. The later updates emphasize crash, stability, gameplay, and UI fixes. Those announcements confirm that 1.16.236 is historical; they do not establish whether Bethesda released another patch after June 11, 2026.
