What the Staff of Crones does
The Staff of Crones is a versatile quarterstaff and story item. Its special property grants the holder Ray of Sickness, cast at level one, with the use returning after a short rest. The item reference lists its weapon action, Topple, for characters proficient with the weapon.

Where to find the Staff of Crones
Look for it on the ground in the treasure room of the Ancient Abode, Auntie Ethel’s workshop beneath her Teahouse. The location reference places the workshop around X: -412, Y: 606; use those coordinates as a navigation aid, since they may vary by version or context. BG3 Wiki Ancient Abode reference
- Enter Auntie Ethel’s lair beneath the Teahouse.
- Reach the Ancient Abode and locate the treasure room/workshop.
- Search the ground for the Staff of Crones and pick it up.
Is it worth using?
Its clearest advantage is the extra, short-rest-recharging spell, which can add a ranged option for a character who can make use of it. Its quarterstaff damage uses Strength, so weigh that against the character’s other weapons and abilities. The available item and location references do not establish how its behavior differs across game versions.
