Star Wars: Squadrons is a compact, cockpit-focused space-combat game with a single-player story and team multiplayer—not an online-only title. It is most appealing if you want to pilot familiar Star Wars starfighters, enjoy learning their controls, or have friends for squad play. Before buying, weigh whether you want the campaign or multiplayer, which control method suits you, and whether you plan to use optional VR.
What kind of game is Star Wars: Squadrons?
Developed by Motive Studios, Star Wars: Squadrons combines a single-player story with online team combat. Its original story is set after Return of the Jedi, as the Empire declines and the New Republic rises. The official launch announcement describes the campaign as taking place during the Empire’s final days and the New Republic’s emergence (StarWars.com).

For multiplayer, the announced formats include five-versus-five Dogfights and strategic Fleet Battles. Steam also lists online co-op alongside online PvP and single-player, so the game offers more than competitive matches alone (Steam; StarWars.com).
What do the reviews say?
Steam user reviews
On October 8, 2026, Steam showed 68% positive English-language user reviews from 19,098 reviews. That is a mixed user-review snapshot for one storefront; it is not a critic score, a platform-wide verdict, or a measure of current player activity (Steam).

Critic coverage
A reliable current critic-score aggregate is not established here, so there is no sound basis for reporting a review average or claiming a broad critic consensus. TIME’s October 19, 2020 review praised the cockpit perspective and said the game could be more enjoyable with friends. The reviewer also described control choice as a factor in competitive play; that is one reviewer’s assessment, not a measured finding or a universal rule (TIME).
Is Star Wars: Squadrons worth playing?
It is a stronger fit if you want a focused starfighter game, value being in the cockpit, and are willing to spend time getting comfortable with flight controls. The campaign gives you a solo option, while Dogfights and Fleet Battles provide team multiplayer. TIME’s review found the cockpit view satisfying and suggested that playing with friends could add to the experience (TIME).
Think twice if you mainly want a large, varied single-player adventure, dislike learning specialized controls, or are buying specifically for a busy online community: the available evidence does not establish current player population or matchmaking conditions. The 2026 Steam percentage is useful context about user sentiment, but it cannot answer those questions.

Platform and release
The game launched on October 2, 2020, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Official sources describe VR support for PlayStation 4 and PC, and the original announcement said cross-play would be supported across the listed platforms and VR (StarWars.com; PlayStation). EA’s product page lists PC through EA app, Steam, and Epic Games, as well as PlayStation and Xbox One; check the live store for the current listing and purchase options (EA).

Controls: controller, mouse and keyboard, or HOTAS
Review coverage identifies controller, mouse and keyboard, and HOTAS flight controls as options. You do not need HOTAS to play. TIME’s reviewer felt that a more intuitive control setup could offer an advantage in competitive play, but that judgment does not establish a universal ranking of control methods (TIME). If you are considering a HOTAS, verify that the specific device works with your platform; compatibility for any particular model is not established here.
Optional VR
VR is an optional way to experience the cockpit, not a requirement. Official sources identify VR support on PS4 and PC; confirm the relevant store’s current compatibility information and the requirements of your headset before buying (StarWars.com; PlayStation).
Rank #4
- Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series is a cinematic, interactive adventure that lets you step inside a galaxy far, far away
- Experience this thrilling three-part series in virtual reality
- Descend into Darth Vader’s mysterious fortress alongside new allies and encounter fearsome enemies, including the Sith Lord himself
- Be at the center of a story in which you hold the key to the galaxy’s salvation… or destruction
- An authentic Star Wars story that takes place between Episode III and Episode IV, which gives a personal look at Darth Vader himself
PC graphics requirements
EA lists a GTX 1060 for non-VR use and minimum VR, and a GTX 1070 for recommended VR. These are the graphics-card requirements published on EA’s product page, not a guarantee that a particular PC, headset, or present-day configuration will be compatible (EA).
