Blizzard has announced a new StarCraft game, but it has not announced a game called StarCraft 3. The project Blizzard describes is an original open-world shooter targeting Spring 2030. A separate report about a possible StarCraft sequel involving Nexon remains unconfirmed and should not be confused with Blizzard’s announced game.
What Blizzard officially announced
Blizzard’s September 12, 2026 announcement calls the project STARCRAFT and describes it as an “original open-world shooter,” with a target release window of Spring 2030. It does not call the game StarCraft 3 or identify it as a numbered real-time strategy sequel.

Game Informer’s announcement coverage likewise describes a StarCraft open-world shooter. Its account of the reveal cinematic says it featured Marine Holt and a Zergling attack; that cinematic is not a full gameplay feature list.
How the official project differs from the sequel rumor
| Claim | Who announced or reported it | Status | Genre and title | Release information |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| New StarCraft project | Blizzard Entertainment, September 12, 2026 | Officially announced | Called STARCRAFT; described as an original open-world shooter | Targeting Spring 2030 |
| Possible separate sequel involving Nexon | GamesRadar+, September 2, 2026 | Unconfirmed reporting; not an official Blizzard announcement | Discussed as a possible StarCraft sequel; the reviewed report does not establish it as a confirmed StarCraft 3 or specify that it is the announced shooter | Not stated in the GamesRadar+ report |
GamesRadar+ reported claims of a possible Nexon arrangement, but presented the arrangement and project as hypothetical or unconfirmed. That report does not establish that Blizzard has confirmed StarCraft 3, or that the alleged sequel and Blizzard’s shooter are the same project.

What is known about the shooter’s direction
StarCraft general manager Dan Hay described the creative conversations behind the project at BlizzCon 2026. In an interview report, he said, “Every time we drew a picture or every time we talked about it, it was boots on the ground every time.” He connected that direction with ground-level action, characters, armor, exploration, and discovery. This explains the team’s creative focus; it should not be read as a complete list of confirmed mechanics or features.
Game Informer interviewed lead developers Dan Hay and AnaLee Haertling about the project in its September 25, 2026 coverage. The public details established by the cited announcement coverage remain limited: a genre description, a release target, and reveal material.

What has not been confirmed
The cited announcement and coverage do not establish platforms, system requirements, preorder details, or a complete gameplay feature list. They also do not establish that the announced shooter is a numbered RTS sequel. The public name in the announcement coverage is StarCraft or STARCRAFT; final branding and additional details could change as development continues.

StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty is a released earlier franchise game, not the announced open-world shooter. Activision Blizzard’s July 27, 2010 publisher announcement said it was on sale and described it as a StarCraft sequel. That historical use of “sequel” does not make the 2030-targeted project StarCraft 3.
