For maximum production, keep 20 slimes and fill all four troughs. Sprinklers can handle the watering, so the daily setup does not have to depend on a Watering Can.
What the Slime Hutch does
The Slime Hutch houses up to 20 slimes. Slime balls can appear overnight when the building has at least five slimes and at least one filled trough. The maximum is four slime balls per day, requiring 20 slimes and all four troughs filled. Slime balls are collected items; the slimes themselves do not need to reach the troughs.

How to build a Slime Hutch
Robin sells the Hutch at the Carpenter’s Shop. Its listed footprint is 7×4 tiles, and it costs 10,000g, 500 Stone, 10 Refined Quartz, and 1 Iridium Bar. The building holds up to 20 slimes.
How to get slimes into the Hutch
Start with Marlon’s egg
After you purchase the Hutch, Marlon visits and gives you a Slime Egg to get started. The building comes with a Slime Incubator for hatching eggs.

Find or hatch more eggs
After you have constructed a Hutch, a slain slime has a 1% chance to drop a Slime Egg. An egg takes 4,000 in-game minutes to incubate—described as three full days from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m., plus six hours. An egg will not add a slime while the Hutch is at its 20-slime capacity; remove a slime to make room before relying on an egg to hatch.
How to fill the troughs and automate watering
The Hutch has four troughs. You can fill them with a Watering Can, or place sprinklers within range to water them automatically. The slimes do not need to physically reach the troughs for slime balls to form.
For the highest possible daily output, keep all four troughs filled. If you are short on sprinklers or prefer to water by hand, at least one filled trough is enough for the minimum production condition, provided the Hutch has at least five slimes.
Why slime balls may not appear
Check the two production requirements first: the Hutch needs at least five slimes and at least one filled trough. To reach the four-ball maximum, it needs 20 slimes and all four troughs filled. Slime balls form overnight, so collect them after sleeping.

The wiki notes that troughs left filled from the previous day can be emptied after sleeping without affecting that day’s production. It also documents a mobile save-loading bug that can empty troughs prematurely. For that mobile-specific issue, the documented workaround is to fill the troughs shortly before sleeping.

Slime balls cannot spawn on crafted flooring. You can use flooring to steer their spawn locations toward an open area that is easier to reach, while leaving an unfloored space for collection.

You can fence slimes into a section of the Hutch to keep them away from your collection route; they do not need to touch the water. Fences decay as usual, so they require upkeep. Leave yourself clear access to the spaces where slime balls can appear.
What changed in versions 1.5 and 1.6
- Version 1.5 added sprinkler watering for the Hutch’s troughs.
- Version 1.6 changed the footprint from 11×6 to 7×4 tiles, made flooring changeable, and allowed removal of the initial incubator.
- Version 1.6.4 made Napalm Rings non-destructive inside the Hutch.
These are the relevant Hutch changes documented for those versions; they are not a complete list of changes in the game’s latest version.
