If StarRupture crashes on your Steam Deck, start with SteamOS updates, a restart, and closing desktop apps, then test compatibility or graphics changes one at a time. These are troubleshooting checks—not guaranteed cures: Steam’s guidance is general, and none of the reviewed sources confirms a StarRupture-specific fix for Steam Deck. StarRupture is an Early Access game, so compatibility may change with updates. Steam Deck troubleshooting guide · StarRupture on Steam
Before you start: note when the crash happens
A crash during startup and one after playing for a while may call for different tests. Record whether StarRupture fails before reaching its main menu, while loading a save, or during play. Change one setting at a time and check whether the behavior changes; that makes it easier to undo an ineffective change and identify a useful clue.
Steam lists 45 GB of available storage and an SSD among StarRupture’s PC system requirements, along with DirectX 12. Those Windows-oriented listing details are not proof that the game is incompatible with Steam Deck. Steam’s StarRupture technical-support page
Try these seven troubleshooting checks
1. Install SteamOS updates and restart
Check for SteamOS updates, install any available update, then restart the Deck before launching the game again. Steam recommends checking for system updates and restarting when troubleshooting instability. Steam Deck – Software Info & Troubleshooting Guide

2. Close third-party desktop apps
If you installed third-party apps through Desktop Mode, exit or disable them temporarily and retry StarRupture. Steam advises closing or disabling such apps when a Steam application is unstable. If you normally use a background app for overlays, performance monitoring, or other features, test without it so you can tell whether it affects the crash. Steam’s troubleshooting guidance
3. Check StarRupture’s compatibility rating
Look at the game’s Steam Library entry or store listing for its current Steam Deck compatibility label. Valve uses four categories: Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown. A label is useful context, not a diagnosis of your particular crash, and the rating should be checked directly rather than assumed to be current. Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility information

4. Try the latest Proton compatibility tool
Steam Support recommends trying the latest Proton version for a game that is unstable. Before changing anything, note the current setting; if StarRupture is already working well with its default compatibility choice, there is no reason to change it preemptively.
- Open Library and highlight StarRupture.
- Open the game’s menu and choose Properties.
- Select Compatibility.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, then choose the latest Proton version available.
- Launch the game and compare the result with the original behavior. If it is worse, return to the original setting.

5. Lower graphics settings
If the game reaches its menus or runs for a while before crashing, try a lower graphics preset or reduce individual settings. Steam recommends lowering graphics load as a general stability and performance measure. This may not help a crash that occurs before you can access the game’s settings. Steam Deck troubleshooting guide
6. Treat community launch options as experiments, not fixes
Linux users have discussed StarRupture launch crashes and possible launch options, but those reports do not establish a Steam Deck solution. One Steam Community discussion describes a CachyOS desktop user’s crash across several Proton builds and a later environment-variable workaround; another commenter suggested -dx11, while a reply reported poor performance. CachyOS is an Arch-based desktop distribution, and those results may depend on hardware, drivers, game patch, and Proton version. Steam Community discussion

If you choose to test a community suggestion, first save your current launch options, change only that option, and remove it if it makes no difference or worsens performance. Do not paste a long command string as though it were an official or guaranteed fix.

7. Report a crash that persists
If the crash continues after these checks, use the support route on Steam’s StarRupture technical-support page or its product forums. Include details that can help identify the configuration and reproduce the failure:
- Steam Deck model and SteamOS version
- StarRupture game version
- Whether you used the default Proton choice or forced a specific compatibility tool
- When the crash occurs: startup, loading, or during play
- Steps that reliably trigger it, if known
- Which troubleshooting changes you tried and what happened

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to interpret reports and requirements
Compatibility labels, community posts, and system requirements answer different questions. A Valve rating describes a game’s reviewed Deck experience; an individual Linux crash report describes one user’s hardware and software; and the store’s PC requirements list what Steam publishes for the game. None alone proves why your Deck is crashing.
StarRupture entered Early Access on January 6, 2026, according to its Steam listing. Because the game can change through updates, a report about a different game version or Linux configuration may not match your current setup. StarRupture on Steam
