To play Stardew Valley co-op, choose Co-op from the title screen, then host a new farm or load an existing save prepared with enough cabins. The host owns the save and must be in-game with the farm open while friends play. Local split-screen also works, with one connected controller for each additional player.
How Stardew Valley co-op works
Co-op puts everyone on the same farm and shares its world state and main storyline. Players keep their own inventories, skills, achievements, collections, relationships, quests, and crafting and cooking recipes. Wallet sharing can be configured, so check the farm’s multiplayer settings rather than assuming money is always pooled. ConcernedApe’s multiplayer troubleshooting guide explains that the host must have the save open for other players to access their characters.

The host’s system holds the save. Farmhands cannot enter that save when the host is offline or has closed the farm. As the developer’s multiplayer explanation puts it, “The host must be in-game at all times when the group wants to play.”
Start a new co-op farm or prepare an existing one
Host a new farm
- Choose Co-op on the title screen.
- Select the option to host a new farm.
- Choose the starting cabin arrangement and number of cabins for the players joining. Cabins are the farmhands’ homes.
- Start the farm and invite friends using a connection method supported by your platform.
Open an existing save to friends
- Load the save in single-player and build enough cabins for the joining players.
- Save and exit the game.
- Return to the title screen, choose Co-op, and load that save from the co-op menu.
- Invite friends. The host must keep the farm open during the session.
If the save was not launched through Co-op, its Options screen may lack the Multiplayer section. The official troubleshooting guide lists the cabin requirement by total farm size:

Cabin placement and profit-margin choices shape the farm layout and challenge; they do not change basic connection compatibility.
Play together on one screen
Local split-screen lets players share one device. Build a cabin for each additional player, connect a controller for each additional local player, then open Options, scroll to Multiplayer, and choose Start Local Co-op. On PC, the first player’s keyboard remains assigned to that player, although the first player can use a controller instead. On Switch, the guidance specifies a full controller or two Joy-Cons for each player. The multiplayer reference documents the local setup and platform differences.
Player limits and platform compatibility
Player capacity depends on platform, edition, and play mode. The official 1.6 changelog raises the PC multiplayer limit to eight. The multiplayer reference reports a general four-player console limit, with Switch 2 supporting up to eight online; split-screen limits include two players on the original Switch and four on Switch 2. Check the exact platform and edition before planning a group around those limits.
Connection options also vary. On PC, players can join through Steam friends or invite codes; LAN and IP joining are also documented. Console remote multiplayer may require that platform’s online subscription, while nearby Switch players can use local communications without Nintendo Switch Online. Cross-platform play is not broadly supported; the reference describes PC operating systems as compatible with one another and mobile as an exception. Treat any specific cross-platform pairing as unconfirmed until current guidance for both platforms says it is supported. See the multiplayer reference for connection details.

- You’ve inherited your grandfather’s old farm plot in Stardew Valley. Armed with hand-me-down tools and a few coins, you set out to begin your new life.
- Now with Multiplayer! Invite 1-3 players to join you in the valley! Players can work together to build a thriving farm, share resources, and build relationships with townspeople or each other.
- New Single Player Content! Including the new Winter Market Festival, more collectibles, added character cut-scenes and even hats for your horse!
Mobile multiplayer
ConcernedApe describes Android and iOS multiplayer as experimental; it is unavailable on Apple Arcade. Mobile has no farm discovery and uses IP addresses to connect, and the official guide warns that hosting from a mobile device can have connectivity problems. Check the developer’s mobile multiplayer guide before relying on a phone or tablet as the host.

If a friend cannot join, work through these checks in order. They help isolate common causes, but no single network change is guaranteed to resolve every connection issue.

- Match game versions and builds. The developer says everyone must use the same game version. For 1.6, the official changelog additionally requires the same build number.
- Open the save through Co-op. The host should start the farm from the title screen’s Co-op flow. Confirm that the in-game Options screen includes Multiplayer.
- Check the cabin count. Make sure the farm has one cabin for each joining farmhand, using the total-player table above.
- Check the invite service. For the corresponding PC invite flow, make sure Steam or GOG Galaxy is running.
- Check network blocking. Firewall, antivirus, router, or console NAT settings may prevent players from communicating. The official guide cautions that firewall changes affect system security; consult your operating system, router, or platform documentation rather than broadly disabling protections.
The 1.6 changelog also describes multiplayer performance, bandwidth, and synchronization changes, but that is not a promise that a particular network adjustment will fix an individual connection.
