There is no single best tool-upgrade order in Stardew Valley. Upgrade the tool that is slowing down your current goals: choose the Pickaxe for mining progress, the Axe when wood or Large Logs block access, and the Watering Can when you still water a large crop area by hand. Plan each upgrade around being without that tool for a day.
Choose the tool that addresses your current bottleneck
Use these priorities as a decision guide, not a fixed ranking. What you do most in your save—and what is currently stopping you—matters more than a universal “best first” answer.

Pickaxe: mining is slowing you down
Prioritize the Pickaxe when breaking rocks and progressing through mines are central to your plans. Stronger Pickaxes improve mining efficiency; at the Iridium tier, the Pickaxe breaks rocks in the Quarry Mine and Skull Cavern in one hit. That makes the upgrade especially relevant if you spend time in those areas, rather than an automatic first choice for every player. Stardew Valley Wiki: Pickaxes
Axe: wood or Large Logs are blocking progress
Upgrade the Axe when gathering wood is a frequent task or you need to clear Large Logs. The Steel Axe can chop Large Logs, making Steel a useful access milestone when one of those logs is in your way. Axe upgrades also reduce the hits needed for chopping. Stardew Valley Wiki: Axes

Watering Can: manual watering takes too long
Choose the Watering Can when watering a substantial area by hand is consuming time you would rather spend elsewhere. Upgrades increase its charge capacity and allow charged watering across multiple tiles. If sprinklers already handle most of your crops, the immediate benefit may be smaller; that is a practical inference from the tool’s watering function, not a separate game rule. Stardew Valley Wiki: Watering Cans
No urgent need: follow your routine
If no upgrade unlock or task is holding you back, choose the tool you use most often. Also consider whether you have the required bars and gold, and whether you can manage without that particular tool during the upgrade period.

Account for the two-day upgrade window
Clint handles tool upgrades at the Blacksmith. Each upgrade takes two days: you can use the tool on the day you hand it in, you are without it on the intervening day, and you can collect it on the second day. Upgrades must follow the material tiers in ascending order, so a Copper tool cannot jump straight to Iridium. Stardew Valley Wiki: Tools and Stardew Valley Wiki: Blacksmith
- Before upgrading the Watering Can, check the forecast. If rain is predicted for the next day, water crops before handing it in; rain can cover that day’s watering need, depending on your crop setup. Stardew Valley Wiki: Blacksmith
- For any tool, avoid handing it over just before a day when you expect to rely on it. The best timing depends on your plans for that day.
- Because tiers cannot be skipped, plan for the material ladder rather than treating a higher-tier upgrade as a single step.
Build an order around your save
- Identify the task that is costing you the most. Is it mining, chopping wood, reaching areas behind Large Logs, or watering crops by hand?
- Pick the upgrade that changes that task now. Favor the Pickaxe for mining efficiency, the Axe for wood access—especially the Steel Axe milestone—or the Watering Can for a large manually watered crop area.
- Check the calendar and your next day’s plans. Make sure the tool’s absence on the intervening day will not disrupt an important task. For the Watering Can, consider the forecast and water before handing it in if rain is expected the next day.
- Repeat for the next bottleneck. Complete the required tiers in order, then reassess; your priorities can change as your farm, access, and routine change.
