At Farming levels 5 and 10, Stardew Valley lets you choose professions that shape how your farm earns and grows. Choose Tiller if crop sales or artisan processing are central to your plans; choose Rancher if animal products are your focus. Your level 5 choice locks in the level 10 branch, so consider the whole path—not just the immediate bonus.
How Farming professions work
You gain Farming experience by harvesting crops and through animal-related actions such as petting, milking, shearing, and collecting coop products. Reading the Stardew Valley Almanac or Book of Stars also grants Farming experience, according to the Stardew Valley Wiki’s Skills reference. Each Farming level adds 1 proficiency to the Hoe and Watering Can. You choose a profession at levels 5 and 10, and the level 5 choice determines which level 10 professions are available.

Which Farming profession should you choose at level 5?
| Profession | Effect | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Tiller | Raises the sale value of vegetables, flowers, and non-foraged fruit by 10%, according to the Stardew Valley Wiki’s Farming reference. | Farms that sell crops or plan to pursue Artisan or Agriculturist. |
| Rancher | Raises animal-product value by 20%, according to the Stardew Valley Wiki’s Farming reference. | Farms centered on selling animal products or pursuing Coopmaster or Shepherd. |
Neither choice is universally more profitable. The result depends on what you produce, whether you process it, and which level 10 profession you want. Tiller is the entry point to both crop-growth and artisan-value bonuses; Rancher is the entry point to animal-focused bonuses.
Which fruit gets Tiller’s bonus?
Tiller does not boost every fruit. The game treats fruit grown from any of the four Wild Seed varieties, wild-spawned fruit, and fruit found in the Farm Cave as foraged, so those sources do not receive Tiller’s crop-value bonus. Fruit grown from standard seeds and fruit collected from trees are examples of non-foraged fruit that do. The Stardew Valley Wiki’s Fruits reference explains this distinction.

What does each level 10 profession do?
| Level 5 path | Level 10 profession | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Tiller | Artisan | Raises the value of most artisan goods by 40%, including wine and cheese. Oil and Coffee do not get the increase; the Artisan Goods reference also excludes several tree syrups. |
| Tiller | Agriculturist | Makes all crops grow 10% faster. This shortens growth time rather than raising sale value. |
| Rancher | Coopmaster | Coop animals become friends faster, and incubation time is halved. The incubation effect covers Incubators, Ostrich Incubators, and Slime Incubators. |
| Rancher | Shepherd | Barn animals become friends faster, and sheep produce wool faster. |
The Farming and Skills references document the profession effects. For crop timing, the Speed-Gro reference says its 10% growth effect combines with Agriculturist for a 20% total growth-speed bonus.
Artisan or Agriculturist?
Pick Artisan when your routine turns harvests into goods that receive its bonus. It increases value, not production speed, and its exceptions mean it does not improve every item commonly grouped as an artisan good. Pick Agriculturist when earlier harvests are more useful to your crop cycle than a higher value per qualifying processed item. The right choice depends on what you grow, process, and sell; the wiki does not establish a universal profitability winner.
Coopmaster or Shepherd?
Choose Coopmaster for a coop-centered farm or when shorter incubation time supports your plans for hatching animals. Choose Shepherd for a barn-centered farm, especially if faster sheep wool production matters to your output. Both professions improve friendship for their relevant animal group, but the wiki does not provide a controlled earnings comparison between them.
How do Coopmaster and Shepherd affect product quality?
There is also a less obvious quality effect: Coopmaster and Shepherd each add 0.333 to the quality score for products from the relevant animal type, according to the Stardew Valley Wiki’s Farming reference. The wiki reports these quality frequencies for animals at maximum friendship—5 hearts, or 1,000 friendship points—and maximum mood, 255:

- Identify your main output. Crop sales point toward Tiller; animal products point toward Rancher. If you mainly sell processed goods, check whether those goods receive Artisan’s bonus.
- Decide whether value or speed matters more. Artisan raises the value of most qualifying goods; Agriculturist speeds crop growth. Coopmaster and Shepherd support animal friendship and their respective production or incubation benefits.
- Match the animal branch to your farm. Choose Coopmaster for coop animals and incubation, or Shepherd for barn animals and sheep wool.
- Check fruit sources and processing exceptions. Tiller’s fruit bonus depends on whether the fruit is foraged, and Artisan has named exclusions.
- Choose level 5 with level 10 in mind. Tiller leads to Artisan or Agriculturist; Rancher leads to Coopmaster or Shepherd.
Version and source notes
The profession effects here are attributed to the community-maintained Stardew Valley Wiki; they are not presented as independently verified developer statements. The retrieved references do not give a publication year for the current effect figures. The Farming page’s history records that version 1.1 changed Rancher’s bonus from 10% to 20% and Artisan’s from 50% to 40%. This guide therefore avoids treating those history notes as a version check for any particular current game build.
