In March 2024, players reported that StarCraft II froze or crashed when they opened Custom Games or while custom lobby and map names were loading. A support statement reproduced at the time acknowledged an issue with Custom tabs that load map names and advised players to avoid the main Custom entry point while it persisted. Later developments include a community report that a March 2024 game update addressed the initial freeze and an official Blizzard update about custom-map publishing in 2025–2026. Those publishing changes do not establish whether the exact 2024 client crash currently reproduces.

What players reported in March 2024

Players described the game freezing before lobby listings appeared or crashing after clicking Custom. Some said other parts of the game still worked. These are individual forum reports, not evidence that every player experienced the same issue or that there was one cause.

One Blizzard forum report, posted March 12, 2024, was titled “Custom Game Menu Freeze.” A player wrote, “When I go to the custom games tab, the game freezes before any lobbies can load up.” Another support-thread title used the phrasing “SC2 crashes when CUSTOM is clicked.” Such descriptions capture the symptom players searched for; they are not official diagnostic terms.

What the support statement acknowledged

PiunikaWeb reported the issue on March 18, 2024, and reproduced a statement attributed to Blizzard support. The article did not name the support representative or give their role. The quoted guidance was:

#1 Best Overall
StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty
  • Fast-paced, hard-hitting, tightly balanced competitive real-time strategy gameplay that recaptures and improves on the original game
  • Three completely distinct races: Protoss, Terran, and Zerg
  • Units and gameplay mechanics distinguish each race
  • 3D-graphics engine with support for visual effects and massive unit and army sizes
  • Full multiplayer support, with competitive features and matchmaking utilities available through Battle.net

“There’s currently an issue with any tab under the ‘Custom’ game mode that loads custom map names. As long as players don’t select the Custom mode (which defaults to the Lobbies tab) the game won’t freeze.”

The practical workaround in that statement was to avoid selecting the main Custom mode entry point while the issue persisted. A forum participant said they could reach custom games through Campaign’s Custom submenu, but that is an individual report, not a guaranteed workaround.

What changed after the original reports

March 26, 2024: reported client update

A community technical analysis says StarCraft II version 5.0.13.92028, released March 26, addressed the initial freeze behavior. The same author distinguishes a later crash variant associated with malformed maps. This is community-authored technical analysis, not an official Blizzard diagnosis, and it should not be treated as proof that every later crash has the same cause.

2025–2026: custom-map publishing service work

Blizzard’s official forum timeline says Galaxy Editor map publishing was disabled on April 21, 2025, while Blizzard worked on fixes for abuse involving custom-game lobbies. A post dated February 24, 2026, says map publishing had been re-enabled and points players to in-game reporting options for inappropriate map content.

That timeline concerns map publishing and service work. It does not confirm that the 2024 Custom-tab crash remains active, nor does it prove that every client crash has been fixed.

March 12, 2024 A player posted a Blizzard forum bug report describing a freeze before lobby listings appeared; other users reported similar behavior. Player reports of a symptom, not an official incident count or a confirmed cause.
March 18, 2024 PiunikaWeb reproduced a Blizzard support statement about Custom tabs that load map names. An acknowledged interface issue and a temporary avoidance recommendation, as quoted in secondary reporting.
March 26, 2024 A community technical analysis says version 5.0.13.92028 addressed the initial freeze and discusses a later malformed-map variant. A community account of the client update and a distinct crash variant, not an official diagnosis.

What to do if Custom Games crashes now

The available dated reports do not establish whether the exact March 2024 crash is happening today. If you encounter a similar problem, treat the quoted avoidance advice as historical rather than a confirmed current fix:

Rank #3
Starcraft II PC
  • Videogame Software
  • Note what you clicked and whether the freeze began before lobby listings or after a particular map appeared.
  • Check current Blizzard support resources for up-to-date troubleshooting guidance, rather than relying on old forum commands, hosts-file edits, or third-party scripts.
  • If you can reproduce the problem, report it through current Blizzard support channels with the game version and the steps that trigger it.
  • Use the in-game reporting options for inappropriate custom-map content, as Blizzard’s later publishing update advises.

Forum comments speculated about data theft or viruses, but a game stall or crash alone does not establish malware delivery. The community technical analysis also distinguishes a crash from evidence of malware; it is not an official Blizzard security assessment.

Is this a hardware or purchase problem?

The cited reports concern the game’s Custom interface, map names, and lobby loading. They do not support buying a PC component, peripheral, diagnostic utility, or optimization tool as a fix.
