There is no established single best armor set for every Starfield character, game version, and playthrough. For a named quest reward, pursue the Mantis armor; for a faction-mission suit with published base resistance values, complete “Grunt Work” for the UC Vanguard Spacesuit. Starborn suits belong to New Game Plus, while city vendors are a practical option when you want to shop rather than follow a quest.
What counts as an armor set in Starfield?
A spacesuit is only one part of a character’s equipment. A complete armor loadout can include a spacesuit, helmet, and pack; apparel is a separate equipment category. When comparing a named set, check which pieces you actually have rather than assuming a suit name covers all of them. StarfieldDB’s armor database provides a broad fan-maintained reference for armor pieces and their attributes.

There is no substantiated universal winner across current versions, downloadable content, item tiers, and randomized effects. A useful choice depends on the item’s physical, energy, and EM protection; environmental resistances; perks or legendary effects; weight; and appearance. Higher-tier or randomized drops can differ from a named item’s base values, so compare the item descriptions in your own game before treating any ranking as definitive.

How to get the UC Vanguard Spacesuit
Complete the UC Vanguard mission “Grunt Work.” Game8’s guide associates that mission with the UC Vanguard Spacesuit and lists its base suit resistances as 64 physical, 68 energy, and 72 EM, with thermal 15 and corrosive 30. The guide also lists mass 7.0 and value 7,475; those are guide-reported item figures, not a promise that every version, tier, or drop will show the same values.
Use those numbers as a point of comparison, not proof that the Vanguard suit beats other armor. Inspect the actual item you receive, including its tier, effects, weight, and the protection values that matter for your character.

When Starborn suits become available
Starborn suits are tied to New Game Plus progression rather than an ordinary early-game quest or shop purchase. Game8’s unique-armor guide lists Astra for the first New Game Plus cycle and Venator for the tenth and onward. Because those pieces belong to successive cycles, they are relevant to players continuing into New Game Plus, not to someone choosing their first set during an initial playthrough.
