A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11If Starfield has no sound or its surround channels are wrong, the fix depends on your platform and symptom. On PC, start with Windows’ selected output device and speaker configuration; on Xbox Series X|S, Bethesda’s documented steps include disabling a recently installed Creation and clearing the game’s reserved space without deleting your save. The Xbox guidance refers to reports following a June 9, 2024 update, so it should not be taken as confirmation that the same issue is still active.
First, identify the audio problem
Check whether the issue is limited to Starfield or affects other audio on the same device, and note whether it began after changing Windows audio settings or installing a Creation. These checks help you choose the relevant steps; they do not by themselves prove that the game is at fault.
- PC surround sound or missing channels: Check the active Windows output device and its multichannel configuration.
- PC has no sound: Check Windows’ output selection, volume, default playback device, enhancements, and drivers.
- Xbox Series X|S has no sound: Follow Bethesda’s console-specific troubleshooting, taking care to preserve save data.
PC: fix surround sound or missing channels
Bethesda says Starfield uses the device set as Windows’ default output, provided that device can decode audio and is configured for multichannel sound. Bethesda lists 2.1, 4.0, 5.1, 7.1, and 9.2 as examples of multichannel configurations.
- Connect the speakers or audio device you want to use, then select it as the active Windows playback device.
- Open Windows sound settings: use Sound Settings in Windows 10 or Speaker setup in Windows 11.
- Choose the multichannel configuration supported by your device, if one is available, and check whether the game now plays through the intended channels.
- In Windows 11, check that Mono audio is off.
Bethesda notes that the game has no in-game control for manually selecting or configuring a surround device: “There is no option in the User Interface of the game to manually configure such a device, therefore the changes have to be made in the Windows Audio Settings.”

- HYPERCLEAR CARDIOID MIC — An improved pickup pattern ensures more voice and less noise as it tapers off towards the mic’s back and sides, with the sweet spot easily placed at the mouth because of the mic’s bendable design
- ADVANCED PASSIVE NOISE CANCELLATION — Sturdy closed earcups fully cover the ears to prevent noise from leaking into the headset, with its cushions providing a closer seal for more sound isolation
- LIGHTWEIGHT DESIGN WITH MEMORY FOAM EAR CUSHIONS — At just 240 g, the headset features thicker headband padding and memory foam ear cushions with leatherette to keep gaming in peak form during grueling tournaments and training sessions
- WORKS WITH WINDOWS SONIC — Make the most of the headset’s powerful drivers by pairing it with lifelike surround sound that places audio with pinpoint accuracy, heightening in-game awareness and immersion
If multichannel options are unavailable
If Windows greys out the multichannel choices, Bethesda says the selected speakers may not support them, or the audio drivers may need updating. Check that the intended device is selected and capable of the configuration before trying driver changes.
PC: troubleshoot missing sound throughout Windows
If sound is missing in Starfield and other Windows apps, treat this first as a Windows audio problem rather than assuming a game-specific fault. Microsoft identifies an incorrect output device, muted volume, audio enhancements, and malfunctioning drivers among possible causes. Its Windows 11 guidance recommends checking the output and volume, setting the intended playback device as default, turning off enhancements, and using the Get Help audio troubleshooter.

- In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Sound and select the intended output device. Check that it is not muted and that its volume is audible.
- Open More sound settings > Playback, select the device you intend to use, and set it as the default playback device.
- Turn audio enhancements off for that device and test sound again.
- If the problem continues, run the Windows 11 audio troubleshooter through Get Help. Microsoft also documents driver update or reinstall and audio-format troubleshooting for Windows audio problems.
These are Windows-level checks, not fixes Bethesda specifically identifies for Starfield. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; that date is not evidence that the support change caused an audio problem in the game.
