For more iridium, prioritize descending: the Stardew Valley Wiki says iridium-ore odds rise with depth and increase rapidly between floors 10 and 100. Bring bombs to clear dense rock clusters, staircases to skip slow or dangerous floors, and a weapon plus health recovery to stay alive. If you are attempting Qi’s Hungry Challenge, apply your buffs before entering—food and drink are forbidden inside.
Choose a goal before you enter
A Skull Cavern trip works best when your supplies and choices match one goal. Decide whether you are mainly seeking iridium, trying to reach a particular floor, or exploring for a mix of resources. That choice determines whether it makes sense to clear a rock-filled floor or use a staircase and move on.

- For iridium: Favor efficient descent. The Stardew Valley Wiki’s Skull Cavern guide says the chance of finding iridium ore rises as you go deeper, with a rapid increase between floors 10 and 100.
- For exploration: Spend more time breaking rocks and gathering resources on floors that look promising, accepting that this slows your descent.
- For a floor challenge: Take enough staircases to make progress predictable, and plan food and drink around any restrictions.
Luck also affects how frequently ladders and shafts appear, according to the wiki. Check the day’s luck and consider an available luck buff, but there is no single best food or universal luck threshold established here; choose based on what you have unlocked and can afford.
Pack for survival and progress
Carry a weapon, health recovery, bombs, and some staircases if you can spare them. Keep the inventory focused on the run rather than filling it with unrelated tools or loot. There is no universal ideal bomb or staircase count: bring what fits your resources and objective.

Bombs find routes through dense rock
Bombs damage groups of rocks at once, helping you uncover a ladder or shaft without breaking each rock individually. Use them when the floor has dense clusters; a scattered floor may not justify the cost.
Staircases give immediate progress or an exit
A staircase takes you down one floor immediately, or can provide an escape from a dangerous floor. Each one is consumed when used. You can craft one from 99 stone at Mining level 2, or trade one jade for one staircase with the Desert Trader on Sundays. See the Stardew Valley Wiki’s staircase page for the item details.
| Option | What it does | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Bomb | Clears a group of rocks, potentially revealing a descent while collecting nearby resources. | Floors with dense rock clusters when you want to find a route without clearing rocks one by one. |
| Staircase | Provides an immediate one-floor descent; consumed on use. | A slow or dangerous floor, or a run where reaching depth matters more than clearing the current floor. |
Keep buffs separate from recovery
Food buffs generally replace other food buffs. Coffee, Triple Shot Espresso, and Ginger Ale are exceptions: they stack with food buffs, but not with one another. Carry separate healing food if you expect to need recovery. The Stardew Valley Wiki’s buffs guide describes buff behavior.
Use a repeatable approach inside the cavern
- Check the floor before spending resources. Look for dense rock groups, threats, and whether the floor is worth clearing for your goal.
- Bomb clustered rocks. Use bombs to search for a descent when there is a good cluster to clear.
- Descend when the floor is slow or risky. Use a staircase to skip it or escape enemies, especially when your priority is reaching deeper floors.
- Watch your health. Keep recovery available rather than risking a knockout to save time or supplies.
- Choose whether to continue or return. Deeper floors improve iridium prospects, but a run also needs enough time and health to remain safe.
Plan around the Skull Cavern clock
In single-player Skull Cavern, an in-game hour lasts 54 real seconds, compared with the normal 43 seconds. Buff durations continue counting down in real time, so a buff covers fewer in-game hours there. The timing returns to normal in multiplayer and on Prehistoric Floors, as recorded in the Skull Cavern guide and buffs guide.
For a single-player trip, do not assume a timed buff will cover as much cavern time as it would elsewhere. Multiplayer uses the normal clock, so the single-player timing adjustment does not apply.
How to reach floor 100 for Qi’s challenge
There are two distinct Qi-related goals. The initial challenge asks you to reach floor 25 and awards 10,000g by mail the following day. Qi’s Hungry Challenge is a separate, repeatable Special Order: reach floor 100 within its time limit without consuming food or drink inside Skull Cavern. The Stardew Valley Wiki’s quests page and its Skull Cavern guide describe these objectives.

Prepare before entering
Because food and drinks are prohibited inside during Hungry Challenge, use any desired buffs before you enter. Those pre-entry buffs remain active. Bring staircases: they are allowed, and using them makes reaching the target more predictable than relying on a descent from every floor.
Balance speed against resources
For a floor-100 attempt, staircases trade supplies for speed and certainty. Spending longer on floors can yield more resources, but uses the limited day and adds exposure to danger. Decide in advance how much exploration you are willing to trade for progress.
Consider passive healing
The wiki identifies the Vampire Ring, a weapon with the Vampiric enchantment, and the Fairy Box as passive healing options. They can help in a challenge where consuming food or drink inside is not allowed.

Protect the run from a knockout
If your health reaches zero, you wake later at Harvey’s Clinic, lose 1,000g, and may lose items. Passing out at 2:00 am also costs money. Health recovery and a safe return are therefore part of the run plan, not just an emergency detail.
What changes on deeper floors and in hard mode?
In version 1.6, the wiki records additional chests on floors 200 and 300, changes to treasure chest contents, and an entrance statue that enables hard mode after Skull Cavern Invasion is completed. These details are version-sensitive; check your platform’s current game version if it differs from the version reflected by the wiki.
