Stardew Valley is an open-ended country-life RPG: you can build a farm, explore the valley, meet its residents, and decide for yourself what a successful playthrough looks like. This hub explains the core loop, what to do first, and where to go for focused help with farming, fishing, mining, relationships, and the rest of the game.
What is Stardew Valley?
You inherit your grandfather’s old farm plot in Stardew Valley. The game gives you a home base and a town to explore, but it does not require you to follow one completion route. You can spend your days growing crops, fishing, foraging, mining, fighting monsters, crafting, cooking, building relationships, completing quests, donating finds to the museum, or restoring the Community Center. The official press page describes the Community Center as a once-vibrant hub now in disrepair; rebuilding it is a major goal, not the only valid way to play.

The game launched on PC on February 26, 2016. ConcernedApe’s official press page reported that it passed 1 million copies sold within two months of release; that is a historical milestone, not a current sales total. The game offers five farm map layouts, so your starting terrain can also shape how you choose to play.
What should you do first?
Start with the basic rhythm of the game rather than trying to optimize every day. Your time and energy are limited, and the valley has more activities than any one player needs to pursue at once.

#1 Best Overall
- Create the farm of your dreams: build your farm from the ground up on 1 of 5 map layouts suited to your play style!
- mmaster your branching skills: raise animals, grow crops, start an orchard and build useful machines!
- become a part of the local community: get to know all 30+ residents of Pelican town!
- customize your farmer: there are hundreds of character customization options to choose from!
- settle down and start a family: share life on the farm with 1 of 12 characters you can date and marry, and even have children with!.explore vast, mysterious caves! Encounter dangerous monsters and valuable treasures!.spend a relaxing afternoon at one of the local fishing spots: the waters are teeming with seasonal varieties of delicious fish. Craft bait, bobbers, and crab pots to help you in your journey toward catching every fish and becoming a local Legend!.
- Learn the farm. Clear a small workable area, plant the starter seeds, and water them. Keep an eye on the calendar so you do not invest in a crop that will not mature before the season changes.
- Check the town and your journal. Read new mail, look at available requests, and speak to people you meet. These introduce activities and goals without obliging you to complete everything immediately.
- Explore in short trips. Gather wild items, try fishing, or visit the mines when they become available. Choose one or two priorities for the day instead of attempting to cover the entire map.
- Keep useful finds. New items may be needed for quests, museum donations, crafting, cooking, or Community Center restoration. If you are unsure whether an item is useful, storing it is safer than selling every unfamiliar find.
- Set your own next goal. You might expand your crops, earn money from fishing, descend farther into the mines, get to know a villager, or work toward a Community Center room. Switch priorities whenever another part of the game interests you.
How the main activities fit together
The activities reinforce one another, but you can engage with them at your own pace. Farming produces income and materials; exploration turns up items for donations, crafting, and quests; relationships and town events add social goals. The official wiki’s Getting Started guide is a useful overview of the game’s open-ended structure.
- Farming: Plant and care for crops, raise animals, and develop your land. See the seasonal farming guide for crop planning and farm routines.
- Fishing: Catch fish in different locations and use fishing as a source of income, ingredients, or collection progress. See the fishing guide.
- Foraging: Gather wild plants and other items as you travel. See the foraging guide.
- Mining and combat: Explore underground areas for resources and face the creatures there. See the mining guide and combat guide.
- Crafting and cooking: Turn collected materials and ingredients into useful items and meals. See the crafting guide and cooking guide.
- Town life: Build friendships, pursue quests, and learn what the residents like. See the gifts and relationships guide and quests guide.
- Collections and restoration: Donate discoveries to the museum or work on the Community Center. See the museum donations guide and Community Center guide.
Which farm map should you choose?
The official press page confirms that there are five layouts, but choosing among them depends on what kind of farm you want. Compare the available maps by usable farming space, terrain and resource access, fishing access, and whether you plan to play alone or with others. The broad overview does not establish a complete map-by-map comparison, so use the farm maps guide for layout-specific details rather than assuming one map is best for everyone.
Can you play Stardew Valley multiplayer?
Yes, the game supports multiplayer, but platform compatibility, player limits, and version requirements depend on the platforms involved. Check the official multiplayer guide for the exact pairing you intend to use before planning a shared farm. The 1.6 changelog also says that players joining a multiplayer game need the same build number as the host, as well as the same version; being on the same broad release alone may not be enough.
The 1.6 update added fishing festivals, among other changes. Consult the official 1.6 changelog for that update’s details, and do not assume its list describes every later patch.
