The first official Starfield: Shattered Space trailer debuted at the Xbox Games Showcase on June 9, 2024. It introduced Va’ruun’kai, House Va’ruun’s secluded homeworld, and teased a story that begins with a distress signal from a derelict star station. The expansion later launched on September 30, 2024 for Xbox Series X|S and PC.
What the first Shattered Space trailer showed
Bethesda’s reveal focused on House Va’ruun and the journey to its home planet, Va’ruun’kai. The route into the story begins with a distress signal from a derelict star station; the expansion then follows the followers of the Great Serpent. Xbox’s June 9, 2024 Showcase recap presented Shattered Space as Starfield’s first major expansion and said it would explore House Va’ruun territory. Its platform line named Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, Steam, and Game Pass.
What changed between the reveal and launch
The trailer was a first look, not a full account of the released story. In Bethesda’s September 27, 2024 launch guide, the central crisis is a massive vortex that has destroyed much of Dazra, House Va’ruun’s city. Players investigate the vortex and what happened to the survivors. Bethesda released the expansion on September 30, 2024 for Xbox Series X|S and PC.

Xbox Wire reported over 50 new locations on Va’ruun’kai. Although the storyline takes place on the planet, players can leave it. Xbox Wire’s September 30, 2024 guide provides the location figure and further details.
How to start Shattered Space
These are the instructions Bethesda published for the expansion’s 2024 launch:
- Complete “One Small Step,” the introductory mission in Starfield’s main quest.
- Make a grav-jump to an orbit that is not already associated with a mission or encounter.
- Answer the distress call from The Oracle to begin the expansion’s story.
Bethesda recommended level 35 for the best experience, but level 35 is not a requirement to start. See Bethesda’s September 27, 2024 launch guide for those steps and the recommendation.

Bethesda’s September 27, 2024 guide described access this way: Premium and Constellation Edition owners received Shattered Space with their purchase; Standard Edition owners could buy the Digital Premium Upgrade; and Game Pass subscribers could upgrade to Premium Edition for access. These are the options stated in that dated announcement, not a guarantee of current availability or terms. Check the regional store listing for the platform and edition you use before purchasing.
