In Starfield, the quickest way to get Ytterbium is to check city vendors; their stock can vary. For a supply you gather yourself, land on a world with Ytterbium, scan for a deposit, and cut it with your cutter. If you want resources accumulating over time, build an outpost extractor on a Ytterbium field.

Buy Ytterbium from a vendor

Start with a major city if you need a small amount without traveling to a resource world. Prima Games names these shops as places to check:

  • New Atlantis: Jemison Mercantile
  • Neon: Mining League
  • Akila City: Midtown Minerals

INARA also lists Ytterbium at vendors including Amoli Bava, Clint De Haven, Wen Tseng, Zoe Kaminski, Alejandra Kane, Duncan Lynch, Isra Liskova, Radley Jaso, Jacquotte Laguerre, Ivica Vukovic, Trader, Jae Montreal, Jane Weller, Manaaki Almonte, Fast Hoang, Dietrich Sieghart, Kolman Lang, Saburo Okadigbo, and Marcel Duris. These listings span Alpha Centauri, Cheyenne, Kryx, Porrima, Sol, Valo, Volii, Wolf, and random locations. INARA’s Ytterbium listing reports different stock amounts, but warns that vendor stock can be random, quantities are not guaranteed, and some items may be restricted by player level. If a shop has none, check another vendor or return after a vendor reset.

Find and mine Ytterbium on a planet

Candidate worlds listed by INARA include Hardpoint in Cheyenne, Maheo II, Tau Ceti V, Muphrid III-a, Bradbury I and II, Indum III-b and V-a, Volt in Delta Pavonis, and Denebola III-a. Prima Games lists additional possibilities, including Alchiba V-a, Archimedes V-a, Bardeen I-a, Celebrai I, Fermi X, Hawking IV-a, Kang I, Kang IV-b, Kang VIII-c, Katydid I-a, Khayyam III-b, Leonis VIII-c, Leviathan IV, Linnaeus IV-b, Maal I, Masada III, Nemeria VI-b, Rasalhague I, Rana III-a, Shoza I-a, Syrma VI-c, Tidacha I-c, Xi Ophiuchi III, Xi Ophiuchi V-a, and Zeta Ophiuchi I. The lists are not identical and are not presented as an official, versioned master list, so confirm Ytterbium on the in-game map before traveling.

  1. Open the Starmap and select a candidate world. Scan it to view its basic resources. Xbox Wire notes that the Scanning skill can reveal rarer resources, and that resource locations can be highlighted on the map to help you choose a landing spot. Xbox Wire’s beginner guide explains the scanning and landing process.
  2. Land in a region where the map indicates Ytterbium. Once on the surface, use the local scanner to locate a deposit.
  3. Approach a solid resource deposit and use the cutter to mine it. Bethesda Support’s resource guide says solid resources occur as ore chunks that can be cut from planetary surfaces. Bethesda also notes that the cutter is received during the first mission and works while it is in your inventory.

Set up an outpost for a continuing supply

If you find a Ytterbium field and want resources over time, build an outpost there and place a resource extractor on the deposit. This takes more setup than buying or mining by hand, but Bethesda explains that outposts can extract planetary resources in larger quantities over time. Check the outpost-building interface to confirm the deposit supports an extractor before committing to the site.

Choose the route that fits your need

Route Best for Trade-off
Buy from a vendor Getting some Ytterbium quickly Inventory and quantities vary; listed stock is not guaranteed.
Mine a surface deposit Gathering without establishing an outpost Requires a trip to a Ytterbium world and time spent locating deposits.
Build an outpost extractor Producing a continuing supply Requires travel and outpost setup at a suitable Ytterbium field.

The available sources do not establish comparable time or credit costs for these routes, so choose based on convenience and whether you need a one-time amount or a repeat supply.

What Ytterbium is used for

Ytterbium is an exotic inorganic crafting resource used in some research and crafting recipes. Database listings differ in how they categorize or enumerate those recipes, so use the specific in-game research or crafting screen to verify that a project or modification requires Ytterbium before collecting it. INARA lists weapon modifications such as Binary Trigger, Burst Fire, Double Barrel Muzzle, Ignition Beams, Overclocked, and Shock Charge Band, as well as the Veryl-Treated Manifold recipe. StarfieldDB lists the manifold and several research projects, including Internal Mods 3, Magazine and Battery Mods 3, Muzzle Mods 3, Receiver Mods 1, and Receiver Mods 2; its page does not list known weapon or armor mod recipes. These databases should not be treated as a single exhaustive recipe list.
