What kind of game is Steel Division 2?
Set on the Eastern Front in 1944 during Operation Bagration, Steel Division 2 is a real-time tactics game focused on large battles, unit composition and deployment decisions. Its Army General mode adds a turn-based operational map layer that connects to real-time battles.
That mix creates two different demands: understanding the tactical fight itself and learning how the campaign layer moves forces into it. The game’s appeal depends heavily on whether you enjoy working through both.
What do reviews praise?
Critics highlight the scale and detail of the battles, as well as the planning and foresight involved in building and deploying forces. PC Gamer’s launch-era verdict put the contrast plainly: “Weighed down by a terrible campaign, this is still a superb multiplayer WW2 tactical RTS.” PC Gamer’s review sees the game at its best in multiplayer and skirmish, where preparation and tactical choices have room to matter.

Metacritic’s displayed critic summaries also describe the game as deep and massive. One 2019 MGG review praised its large arsenal and Army General mode, while raising concerns about AI pathing and the lack of a tutorial for newcomers. These are individual critic judgments, not findings that every player will experience in the same way.
Where does Steel Division 2 fall short?
Army General can be hard to read
PC Gamer criticized the campaign’s interface and the way it explains turn-based movement and action-point rules. The consequences reach beyond navigation: the review says campaign positioning can leave a player short of key unit types when a battle begins. If you expect the operational layer to explain itself clearly, this is a significant point to weigh.

Learning the game takes work
Reviews flag limited onboarding and unclear interfaces as barriers. Metacritic’s review summaries include concerns about accessibility, and the MGG review specifically noted the absence of a tutorial for newcomers. The detailed combat is a strength for players willing to learn the systems, but it raises the entry cost for anyone looking for a quick, easily readable strategy game.
The solo experience is the bigger concern
The sharpest criticism in PC Gamer’s assessment is aimed at the campaign. Other critics on Metacritic raise issues including repetitive battles, interface problems and whether the sequel justifies itself as a separate release. Those views vary by reviewer, but the overall pattern is clear: the strongest recommendation is for players who already want this style of multiplayer tactics, not for someone buying chiefly for a polished solo campaign.

Is Steel Division 2 worth it?
It is most likely to suit players who enjoy planning-heavy tactical battles and want to compete or experiment in multiplayer and skirmish. The game’s battlefield scale and unit detail provide a lot to engage with, provided that learning the systems is part of the attraction rather than an obstacle.
It is a harder recommendation for newcomers who need strong tutorials or for players whose priority is a clear, satisfying single-player campaign. Before deciding, consider which experience matters more to you:

What do the review scores say?
Metacritic displayed a 73 Metascore in its 2019 snapshot, based on 17 critic reviews: 10 positive, seven mixed and none negative. Steam’s catalog includes paid expansions as well as free reinforcement packs. The major expansion surfaced most recently in the available listings, Battle of Dukla Pass, released September 7, 2025. It adds an Army General campaign and six divisions, and its Steam page says it requires the base game. Check the Steam catalog for the current content listings.
