Steam’s “anti-woke” lists are user-run curator pages, not official Valve ratings. One prominent example, Woke Content Detector, says it identifies whether games contain what the curator calls “Woke content” and to what degree. Some players may use such lists as buying filters; developers interviewed by The Guardian describe hostile attention connected to this kind of political framing. The available evidence does not establish how typical those experiences are—or how Steam users generally feel about the lists.
What is the “anti-woke” list on Steam?
It is better understood as a category of user-curated lists than as one official Steam feature. The Woke Content Detector page describes its purpose as identifying whether a game has what it calls “Woke content” and, if so, to what degree. It invites users to contribute. Entries carry the curator’s own Recommended or Not Recommended label and brief explanations; these are opinions, not Valve assessments or independent content ratings. When accessed October 8, 2026, the page displayed 14,926 followers and 1,597 results. Those are changing page counts, not evidence that this many people endorse the curator or that Steam users as a whole agree with it.
The word “woke” has no single neutral, agreed definition in this context. A curator’s label reflects its own political or cultural criteria, which readers should inspect rather than assume are shared or consistently applied.

Why do some players use these lists?
A curator can present a political or cultural judgment as a shortcut for deciding whether to buy a game. Woke Content Detector says it identifies content and its degree; The Guardian also reported on a “NO WOKE” list whose stated aim was to influence purchasing decisions. Such statements show how the curators describe their purpose, not that their classifications are accurate or fair.

- Does it assess material in the game, developers’ conduct outside it, or both?
- Does it explain what qualifies for inclusion and give verifiable examples?
- Are entries dated, updated, and clear about uncertainty or spoilers?
- Is the page offering recommendations, warnings, or political protest?
A second curator, Say No To Woke, appeared in Steam search results with a snippet describing an educational-purpose disclaimer and a group founding date of August 30, 2024. Its page was not directly available for inspection, so those details do not establish its current criteria or size. Steam Curators
Why are the lists controversial?
The disagreement is about more than whether a list is useful. A buyer may see political curation as a legitimate filter; a developer may experience the same framing as an invitation to judge a game or its creators through identity-based criticism. In its February 16, 2026 report, The Guardian described developers’ accounts of hostile commentary, reviews, and discussions involving games with LGBTQ+ characters or developers perceived to hold particular views.

Émi Lefèvre of Studio Plane Toast told the newspaper: “For sure, the ‘anti-woke’ curators brought insincere negative attention to the game.” That is a developer’s account of a particular experience, not proof that every list causes review targeting or that every curator or follower behaves similarly. The reporting does not establish that list inclusion alone caused every review or forum post discussed.
No representative survey in the available sources measures how many Steam users support or oppose these lists. “Dividing opinion” describes the controversy, not a quantified split among Steam’s audience.

How do curator lists differ from Steam reviews?
A curator page and a user review are separate mechanisms. Curators publish their own recommendations and commentary; Steam reviews are user-submitted opinions that feed into a game’s displayed review information. The Guardian reported that, in a response sent January 9, 2026, Steam said: “We aren’t in a position to verify the accuracy of statements made in user reviews.” The newspaper reported that Steam does not try to moderate reviews based on accuracy and that the company framed removal on that basis as potentially being seen as censorship. This is a reported company statement, not a complete account of every current moderation rule.
The same Guardian report covered designer Nathalie Lawhead’s attempt to have two reviews removed, one of which she described as antisemitic. It says one review was removed after broader reporting and the other after Lawhead contacted a Valve employee outside the usual moderation process. This is a reported individual case, not a systematic measure of Steam’s support outcomes.

What does Steam’s review-bomb policy context add?
A 2025 peer-reviewed study in Platforms & Society discusses Steam’s separate concept of off-topic review bombing. It reproduces a 2019 Steam definition: “a review bomb is where [sic] players post a large number of reviews in a short period of time, aimed at lowering the Review Score of a game.” The paper says Steam’s distinction for off-topic review bombing turns on whether the reviews focus on something unrelated to the likelihood that future purchasers will be happy with the game. The study’s historical Borderlands 2 example illustrates how filtering off-topic reviews can alter a displayed score: it reports 90% positive among 1,106 recent reviews, compared with 49% among 5,230 when off-topic reviews were included. These are figures from the paper’s analysis at a particular time, not current Steam statistics, not a measurement of this curator controversy, and not proof that every politically motivated review is off-topic.
