Nintendo warns that some titles may not be supported or fully compatible, so check the status of the specific game you own or plan to buy.
What did the report claim about Switch 2 backward compatibility?
A BGR report published on April 29, 2024, said accessory maker Mobapad claimed Switch 2 would accept original Switch game cartridges and support the existing digital library. BGR described Mobapad’s information as coming from its work developing a controller for the then-unreleased console, and cautioned readers: “We’ll take all of this with a grain of salt for now.” (BGR, April 29, 2024)

That was a pre-launch, secondhand report—not a Nintendo compatibility guarantee. Nintendo’s current guidance is the more useful answer for owners checking what works.
What does Nintendo confirm about Switch games?
Nintendo says physical Nintendo Switch game cards can be inserted into Switch 2. It also warns that “Some Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2 system.” (Nintendo Support: Can I Play Nintendo Switch Games on Nintendo Switch 2?)

In practice, backward compatibility is broad, but not a promise that every title will run without limitations. Nintendo directs players to its game-specific compatibility information. If the game is from a third-party publisher and the available information does not answer your question, contact that publisher for title-specific details.

Check how you play the game, not just whether it launches. Some titles may rely on particular controllers or physical accessories that behave differently with Switch 2.

Nintendo has not published a compatibility percentage in the cited guidance, so a specific share of the Switch library should not be assumed.

Original Switch Joy-Con can connect wirelessly to Switch 2 for certain games, according to Nintendo’s compatibility guide. This can matter when a game’s controls depend on Joy-Con features.
Physical fit is a separate issue: the larger Switch 2 console cannot be placed in several original Labo Toy-Con accessories, and the RC Car antenna cannot be attached to the console. Nintendo notes that Joy-Con can still be used with included Toy-Con accessories. A game may therefore be playable while its original physical setup is not fully usable as before.
