The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has 228 numbered Recipe Book entries, counting cooked dishes, single-ingredient cooked foods, elixirs, and Fairy Tonic. That is a count of entries—not every possible ingredient combination. Use the numbered index at QuestFern’s full recipe list for the complete catalog; below is how its numbering works, how to look up entries in-game, and what to know about ingredients and effects.
How many recipes are in TOTK?
QuestFern’s index, updated September 26, 2026, counts 228 numbered entries in the in-game Recipe Book. The count follows the book’s numbered entries rather than the total number of meals the game can produce.
| Recipe Book numbers | Category | Count |
|---|---|---|
| 1–146 | Cooked dishes, including Dubious Food and Rock-Hard Food | 146 |
| 147–214 | Roasted, frozen, or boiled single-ingredient foods | 68 |
| 215–227 | Elixirs | 13 |
| 228 | Fairy Tonic | 1 |
| Not numbered in the book | Plain Elixir cooking-data slot | Not included in the 228 |
Some lists give 173, but that figure counts simulator recipe rules rather than distinct numbered Recipe Book entries. For the book’s full index in game order—including dish names, ingredients, and heart restoration—see QuestFern’s numbered catalog. Its opening entries include Mushroom Skewer, Meat and Mushroom Skewer, Fish and Mushroom Skewer, Meat Skewer, Fish Skewer, Seafood Skewer, and Copious Meat and Seafood Skewers.

How cooking and recipe variations work
Cook a meal or elixir
Nintendo’s official guide says cooking needs a cooking pot, fire, and ingredients. At a lit pot, you can hold up to five ingredients and add them together; a Portable Pot can be used in the field, though it is a one-use Zonai device. For a single cooked ingredient, drop it near a fire to roast it, then pick it up before it burns away. These cooking steps and the fire warning are described in Nintendo Life’s cooking guide.
Ingredient traits determine effects
Ingredients with traits such as “stam” or “spicy” can give a dish a corresponding benefit. Nintendo’s examples are Energizing Steamed Mushrooms, made with a Stamella Shroom and Stambulb, which restore stamina and hearts, and Spicy Sautéed Peppers, which provide cold resistance and heart recovery.
Rank #2
Common effect-name families include Dark (gloom resistance), Electro (shock resistance), Enduring (adds stamina), Energizing (restores stamina), Fireproof (fire resistance), Hasty (speed), Hearty (extra hearts), Icy or Chilly (heat resistance), Mighty (attack), Sneaky (stealth), Spicy (cold resistance), Sticky (grip), Sunny (heals gloom damage), and Tough (defence). These names describe effect types, not a universal duration or recovery amount: the ingredients and their quantities matter.
One book entry can have many outcomes
A numbered entry is not a promise that every version restores the same hearts or carries the same buff. Ingredient substitutions and quantities can change the result. For example, Nintendo Life reports that its Pepper Steak combination restores four hearts, while a version using Prime Meat and extra peppers restores seven; another combination also provides cold resistance. Those figures apply to the named combinations, not to every Pepper Steak.
Recipe indexes may use a neutral-effect or self-cancelled-effect version as the base name. Zelda Dungeon notes that a version with an effect can still satisfy the same Recipe Book entry, so buffed variants should not automatically be counted as separate numbered recipes. See its cooking-pot meal index for that naming convention. As Nintendo Life explains, there are too many ingredient combinations to list as separate recipes.
